We all know you need to shop around every year and shouldnt automatically renew your insurance as sre as eggs are eggs you'll be getting a rip-off renewal quote.

turns out AA membership is the same, Got my renewal through, £147, quick check on AA website, £88 for the same service!!!

Add to that it can be done via quidco for £42 cashback.

Bloody rip off bds. grumble grumble.

Quite agree.

You can also get some deals on breakdown membership when you get your insurance, that are cheaper than AA membership.

Get an online quote for the lower amount and call them. They will give the lower price at renewal.

They do this every year it seems - read several threads on this topic. Robbing gits.

True!

We've just managed to get Green Flag Recover Plus Personal Cover (for 2 people) £50 cheaper from Privilege than through Green Flag themselves!!

I did, they got it down to £75, I wasnt going to budge until they got it to £46 (the equivalent cost with the quidco cashback) Petty I know, but £29 is still a bit difference, and after the attempt at ripping me off I wasnt going to give them any wriggle room!

Told them to poke it. I'll start new cover the day it expires,

Happened to me this year, when I rang them to ask why the increase they said 'You used us in the last 12 months'!

That's what I paid you for sweetheart.

Amazing how quick it dropped when I pointed out the deal that was on the RACs site at the time.

Yep, I got stuffed too... rang them up and got it down. You also have to be on the ball as they will otherwise automatically renew by direct debit!

Amazing isn't it, that for every one person that rings up and moans to get it cheaper there must be 10 others that don't, so its obviously worth them 'trying it on' at first!

This really, really annoys me - had exactly the same recently (again). They actually have quite a bit of flexibility, last year they matched the quote I had from the RAC and refunded me some cash because they had taken the full amount on DD and due them failing to register a house move the renewal docs had got to me very late.

However, in protest at the way they treat existing customers, I think that this time I am going to vote with my feet and move elsewhere this year.

I think there should be a ban on this automatic DD and credit card renewal thing that has come in with the insurance companies and the likes of the AA. Perhaps if the amount was limited to what you had signed up for but the way it works at the moment gives them carte blanche to take what they like from your account! I don't think that they have to provide enough notice of it upfront or give enough of an option to opt out and given my experience above and the AA's readiness to make a refund I wonder if they are actually on a bit of a sticky wicket with it?

This is the real issue and you CANNOT cancel a credit card direct debit!

Exactly what I did. Rang up and said online prices cheaper as were the RAC - guy at other end went to 'speak to his manager' and hey presto I now had a policy that cost less than the previous year with home start thrown in for good measure.

He was at pains to say when confronted with the fact that new policies were massively cheaper that premiums go up as the longer you are a member for on that policy the more benefits you receive confused

You can cancel dd if it's 48 hours before the date when they are meant to take founds from your account , just speak to your bank . Personally I try not to pay by dd for anything due to the hassle of sorting it out if it goes wrong

But you can tell them to remove the auto-renew function on your account.
We did with Green Flag after being told of the newer much rate through Privilege.

I find it surprising that lots of you still want to stay with them ("I called them to get a price match" etc). Power of corporate advertising or some benefits I'm not aware of ?

Yeah you can, they say you can't, but their computer opens a hidden menu right after it hears you offer to close the account and take business elsewhere;)

It happens to me EVERY year. One quick call and a few choice words and it is sorted at the current internet price. Or even cheaper if I haven't used them that year...

More fool anyone stupid enough to not check their insurance renewals...

In fairness, the low price you get is the introductory quote. It's like I offer half price on my classes for the first two months but if you keep leaving and coming back, we won't be friends.

They called me 4 times about my wife's policy that I cancelled because it was £50 more than online.

Me: I've told you, this is not her number, I've cancelled it, she has cover elsewhere, no more sales calls please

AA tt: It's just we can offer....

Me: I've told you, no more calls, she doesn't want it.

AA tt: Well she will have to tell me that, I can't talk to you about it.

Me: Then stop calling my phone you utter tt!!!!

Beggars belief.

Definitely second the Quidco route. I took AA cover last year for just under £50 including the cashback. Renewal came through a month or so ago at £120-odd, so I phoned them and they reduced it to £69 immediately but wouldn't go any lower, so I cancelled and took out RAC cover through Quidco for just under £50.
