my car is a turbo diesel, stock no modifications

when the car is started from cold there is a prominent turbo build up whistle from 1200 rpm to about 1900 rpm, and if i let go off the throttle in this rev range there is a blow off of pressure sound it sounds

if i let go of the throttle after 2000rpm there is no blow off sound?

also once the engine is warmed up you can barely hear the turbo, most of the time you cant hear it at all, sometimes you can mildy hear it, is this normal?

There is a possibility that you may have a boost leak that is only evident when cold, expansion sealing the small split etc.

Check turbo hoses.

Boost leaks can be quite tricky to find.

If you cannot see or feel any splits, the best thing to do is get a proper diagnostic check and when I say proper I mean one where the technician plugs a laptop into the comm's port on the car and goes out doing some proper data logging on a test run.

He will see the boost pressure tail off or not be up to the correct spec if a leak is present.

Your loss of power, is this only evident when you hear the noise and the engine is cold?

no the loss of power is also when the engine is warm although it doesent seem as bad, when its cold and ive just started it, there is a definate loss of power for 2 minutes, once its warm its at its 'best' but i feel there is still some power missing since i bought it

the other thing is its hard starting when parked uphill but its fine downhill, this loss of power seems to have occured after my last service when the fuel filter and air filter and oil were all changed

Could possibly have damaged a hose that was only slightly split and not causing a prob during the service, or perhaps disturbed one.

It's easily done on a car a few years old with brittle hoses.

You need a diagnostic check to be sure of the cause.

Look in the yellow pages and see whether you have a local diesel specialist who can also do diagnosis and are expreienced with turbo diesels.

not sure about the Focus engine but I blanked off the EGR valve on my MG ZS as it was sticking hlaf open all the time and it has made a world of difference to smoothness and power delivery, might be worth cleaning the EGR valve out first to see if that helps

ah smoke screams of boost leak then, air escaping means overfueling and smokescreen ahoy, the problem is the hole can be miniscule and still cause the problem, I'd just try get hold of all new pipework, shouldn't cost too much

ah sorry missunderstood, to be honest as I've found out only recently going to diesel it could be numerous factors, I think the Ford TD's use the Bosch VP30 high pressure pump, the same as my MG these can cause issues with a negative timing deviation on the diesel injection solenoid so inject the diesel too early, this causes poor running but a lumpy tickover more than anything, it isn't a cheap fix as well, the turbo on mine does whistle a fair bit but I've got a decat so expect it to be a bit louder, I'd do as above and have it checked out diagnostically, might help track down the problem.

Well worth still blanking the EGR though, makes the car a much smoother drive

Spray with carb cleaner to spot the boost leak?

It's always a boost leak biggrin

Or fill the sink with soapy water and fire the engine up in there - spot for bubbles.
