Probably not the right place but I never seem to get answers asking in the specific forums.

Just a quick question on how the washer jets on e36 Beemers work.

Mine dont seem to work, or atleast they do but water only slightly seeps out, it doesn't spray onto the screen. I have tried cleaning the jets and they seem unblocked but screenwash still doesn't seem to be able to get through.

The pump is working as I have disconnected the hose and it squirts out of the tube.

I have noticed that the jets themselves have power cables going to them. I've never seen this before, so what does the power do?

Cheers

the power is for heated jets which stops them icing up in winter.
there quite often is problems with a non return valve but that usually shows up by them dribbling a bit, and taking a while to squirt.

I remember mine stopped working once, it was a while back so I can't remember the ins and outs, but there is a filter somewhere between the pump and the bottle. This had got blocked with some paper or something and water coudn't get past it. Take the bottle out and pull out the motor and have a look.

Might be the non return valve not letting the fluid through - which will result in it going back down the underside of the bonnet between the bonnet and heat shield type stuff. They can be got for pennies from the dealer and just pop on/off. To see if it is the problem, prop the bonnet open and undo the heat shielding (easy - plastic pop rivet type things that can be reused)- get someone to run the screenwash. If it has been doing it for a while the shielding may be watermarked etc. I had this on both my E36's, with the first time damaging the bonnet catch.
