My car renewal comes up for renewal on the 21st May. Not only has it gone up by £200 (almost doubled), despite an extra 1 years NCB and no other change (money grabbing SOABs) but i am in a bit of a sticky situation with renewing it.

Long story short I finish uni on 21st May, and leave in mid July to move down to London where i will start working from Sept 1st. I will also have a considerably different car (1.1 saxo -> new 2.2HDi Citroen C5).

So what options do i have? I can start my insurance as usual on 21st may with my Saxo, but then when i change my car start of july I'll have to adjust it with the insurers (being charged in the process, bunch of untrained thieves), then when I leave Uni, adjust it with insurers (being charged again, emotionless bsdtards) again, and finally when I start my job 1st September, change it again with the insurers (again, being charged...sodding fking creatures).

Each of these changes will likely cost me £25-£55 (based on changing cars & accommodation in the past) which im a bit unhappy about paying, especially as they have doubled my price this year for who knows what reason.

Can anyone think of anything I can do to sort this out? Best I can think of is starting insurance on car, cancelling it before the 2 week cooling off period runs out (legality?) as hopefully ill have/be borderline getting a new car then and can at least knock off one lot of charges.

cheers guys smile

Im going to call my current insurers, but am still looking for a cheaper quote, therefore im not sure who ill be with next.

I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago when they (More Than, current insurers) charged me £55 to change my car from one saxo 1.1 to another saxo 1.1, despite the only difference being 10k less miles & a different colour. I did this 3 weeks after the policy started & they told me I had no other choice. I get the feeling there gunna tell me the same this time around.

£350 -> £520, that's an expensive extra years NCB, ugh frown

I have frown Next cheapest is £480 but i loose my protected NCB, which i am quite fond of. Other then that the cheaper quotes (400-500) excess goes into the £900+ region which I don't fancy, esp with a new car & 20k miles a year to do. frown

I have found a quote of around £375 for what im paying now, however if/when i got my new car, they would charge me £1400 for it.

What are the legalities/costs of taking out insurance & cancelling it within the 2 week cooling off period? I know morally its considerably questionable, but I am hardly feeling generous to insurers atm.
