According to my insurance company, manual gearbox cars are more of a risk than automatics.

Is this true?

well my insurance co once told me the opposite when they tried to justify £1000 hike on a quote with the only difference being auto not manual.

Needless to say i took the hint and found another insurer

In theory yes. With an auto, there is no need to remove a hand from the steering wheel to change gear.

Autos tend to be driven more sedately, by older more mature people and woudl guess they do less milage and don't get taken out in the snow very often.

But also in theory.........this article gives a balanced view.....which points to neither being more or less safer than the other.

I'm guessing my insurance company are looking for the slightest excuse to raise my premium after me not having any accidents since starting drive over 12 years ago.
My no claims has risen to 12 years and I've been driving for 12 years. My yearly premium has come down a lot because of this.....probably to a level where they want reasons for it to go up again.
