r reg, and the asking 700 or offers!!

its red, and has got the mondy versions of the escort cossie wheels! shallower dish i believe!

seems like a fair price, although i would be inclined to offer lower smile

They never really justified the GTI badge in the same way the competition did, more warm than hot. But if you really fancy an escort I guess it's one of the better ones to have. Won't ever win any PH points though.

thats a very valid point, used to own a civic, albeit a ej9 but it still looked nice and went like stink for a 1400!

im in a dilemma, on the lookout for a new car, as we have just had out first baby!
bearing in mind im only 20, rent our house privatly and manage to pay all the bills including my phone and sky by ourselves! without help from the government i might add! i have been able to get around 1500 quid together to invest in a decent car,

preferably im looking for a tdi..and would like a bora, but looking on ebay, they all seem to be 2k+
was looking at audi a4's 96 sorta shape, 1.8t or tdi's again! any other decent cars you can think of? turning into a bit of what car thread now!!

thanks guys!

I had an Escort si a few years ago with the RS kit on it,identical to a gti apart from the half leather interior. It was a very good car overall and never gave me any bother, would have had it a lot longer too if someone hadn't taken the side out of it.
However, given your current situation i'd be looking at the Audi diesels too i reckon.

Take that from a life long Ford fan too!

They are ok. That's about it. The Engines are early Zeta/Zetac units at that age rather than the CVH ones. Definitely not a 'proper' GTi though.

I'd go for the offers wink

Sure its fine for what it is, but there are probably better performing, faster and more fun cars about for the money.

I have one!!

TBH its been nothing but a complete terror, I bought mine from a mate who had completely neglected it in the time that he owned it (loads of mods but a general lack of upkeep and zero mechanical sympathy). Its been returned to standard and looks alot better for it. Still need to sort out the bloody idle control valve though (eats fuel as its running cold all the time and doesn't idle well when cold).

My main gripe is the insurance/performance ratio. This is a group 13 car that barely cracks 60 in 10 seconds and has pretty much sod all in the way of power up until 4000rpm, compare this to say a Saxo VTS which is group 14 and the Saxo will EAT the escort in a straight line AND in the twisties, the Escort is a HIDEOUSLY expensive car to insure for what it is. The handling is pretty poor too, doesn't really feel connected to the road and the steering is really vague.

So as you can probably see I wouldn't reccomend one lol. However I would reccomend a Seat Ibiza GTI 8v if you're looking for a decent fun sub £1000 hatchback. I've had two, they're small, punchy, well screwed together and quite cheap to insure, that 8 valve engine is unburstable and a real pleasure to drive

If you are used to the build of a VW then IMHO you won't want a Ford. My parents sold their Focus about two weeks after seeing our Passat... The materials in the Ford just look cheap in comparison to a VW - IMHO of course.

On that budget i'd be in a 306 DTurbo or HDI, although you'll have to hunt a bit for a genuine good condition one.

They tend to rust on the rear arches, otherwise OK apart from the council estate image.
