Year 2000 / 2001 Jaguar S-Types - worth a squirt?

Accepting that there isn't much to beat an E39 5-series of similar age, what are the good & bad points of a year 2000 / 2001 Jag S-Type?
I know the post-facelift S-Types got much better praise and are generally regarded as not too bad a buy, but what was so utterly wrong with the pre-facelifts?

Based on nothing else but the interior, the later ones are a much nicer place to be

I always liked the S type R, but the V6 versions are lovely, a different car than the E39, probably not as accomplished but worth a look.

I've thought about these too, they look like a bit of a bargain at the moment.
