Hi guys, I'm 17, hoping to pass by August this year (maybe take Pass Plus as well). I was just wondering if anyone knows (possibly from personal experience) what cars I could insure at 17 for around 1k a year?

And also any help with which insurers would be much appreciated smile

Thanks

Chris

Classic car insurance will probably be the best way to go if you're looking at under £1k.

Yeah I would do this if they would just let me build up a no claims bonus which I'm sure you can't with classic insurance frown

Depends on postcode.

A stb0x will be 1500 quid a year. Migh tbe less if you do passplus and put your Mum and Dad on as named (non main) drivers.

DO NOT, AND I REPEAT DO NOT lie to the insurers and get your Dad to insure a car with him as the main driver which you use the most. This is called "fronting" and means you're not insured, and your Dad will get done for fraud.

Good luck!!

On your own policy, you won't find anything under £1k (Feel free to prove me wrong!) on anything that isn't a Classic, and as you said, most Classic car policies won't allow you to build up a NCB for someone your age.

It's pants I know, but unfortunately, Insurance brokers nowadays are money grabbing, blood sucking mother cluckers.

If I were you I would be looking into calling a broker and asking them if there is anything remotely in range. Also, if it's Third Party only or TPFT perhaps this may help?

I mean, a 1.0l Fiesta?

Cheers mate!

Yeah, damn it, my postcode is apparently medium/high.

Could put my mum on it though.

It's so expensive lol!

It is, but we've all been there.

At 17 I paid more on a 1275GT Mini than I do now on a 911!!

And don't go for the obvious.

Young people crash Corsas, Novas and Saxos.

You might be surprised how cheap a Volvo, Land Rover or a Golf Diesel is.....!!

Yes I haven't called up yet but I suppose a human voice is more believable than a comparison site ha ha.

And yeah tpft is a great idea (especially if the car is pants, which it will be lol)

I would love to prove you wrong, but you are looking very much right on all fronts there.

And yes, yes they are.

Yeah I have been avoiding the obvious boy racer cars. I was thinking more along the lines of an Austin Mini 1000 or possibly an old mk2 VW Polo 1.0L?

Too obvious.

Grandad car = Grandad premium.

as above. cheapest quote are on things like a 2cv or original mini with a pathetic engine. these are sub 1000 for a newly qualled 20yr old, and i gues slightly more for a 17year.
moggy minor may be worth a look. classics that are common, slow and cheap are as cheap as it gets normally

I've been looking at Mini's, they are great but they are getting bloody expensive these days. Ha ha yeah a 2CV sounds fun (and slow) or maybe an old VW Beetle?

Cheers

Yeah I am starting to look at the Mini's on Ebay. May look at Minors and 2cv's too, out of curiosity.

Cheers.

Do you really need your own car?

After weighing up the options I decided to just become a named driver on my mum's insurance - £600 on a 1.25L '98 Fiesta. Nothing special obviously, and I can't drive it whenever I want, but it just wasn't worth it to me to spend an extra £2k at least to buy and insure my own car. The times I want to use it rarely clash with when she needs it, and usually her partner's car is there to provide a backup, so it's worked out fine for me.

This sounds like fronting, I'm sure, but she genuinely does use it considerably more than me.
