I sold my MX5 today to a French chap.

I got the V5 signed and gave him section 10 new keeper supplement. He has filled in his address in France in new keeper details (section 6). The info on foreign addresses was quite vague and the DVLA weren't open.

Am I right in thinking that all I need to do is send the v5 to the DVLA and they will issue a new V5 to his french address? Then he can sort out the export of the car and get it registered in France.

From my understanding, he can drive the car in France for upto 12months before it needs to be formally exported/ registered there. Therefore I don't think I need to sort that side of things out, just transfer the registered keeper to him and get the address changed to his France home address, I guess it is upto him to sort the export of the car out later on.

Could anybody who has any experience of this clear up my confusion?

I've bought a lot of cars in the UK and imported into Ireland,
Most sellers are determined to keep the v5 and send to the dvla who then send on to me, this however can take weeks before I get it to re register the car here.
There is a small section on the v5 which is for exporting a car.
You just need to send this part of the v5 to the dvla and give the new owner the rest of the v5.
This then allows him/her to register it immediately if required (as is the case here in Ireland, not sure about france) and the dvla have proof that car has been exported and is no longer yours.

As mentioned above. Just fill in the export slip and send it off to dvla. Give the rest of the v5 to the buyer. I've sold a few cars to Europe and have not had any problems.
