Just after a rough ballpark figure for getting a car shipped from UK to LA, small hatchback sized car?

Cheapest way would be to ship it to New York and then get it driven across. Talk to Atlantic Container Line.

I'd reckon about 800 GBP. Phone Wallenius Wilhemsen at Southampton docks and get a quote. It'll go from Southampton on a roll on - roll off ship straight to Port Oxnard in California.

You really ought to check eligability to bring into the country first though, or it could be an expensive mistake.

Very true. It is for practical purposes impossible to get a personally imported car registered for use on the road in USA.

Cars like Noble have to undergo final build (engine/transmission) in USA with components having full US type approval. Even then some states (California etc) are tougher than others (Texas etc).

Shipping Lines won't deal with you unless you are a limited company. A Freight Forwarder would be your best bet, or a RORO Line as stated

a 20' container from Longbeach to Liverpool last year cost me £1700 + insurance etc.

As others have said if your exporting the car, it may cost a fortune to get registered in the US and if you think that dealing the with the DVLA is fun, wait until you meet the DMV!

ETA

Container cost was port to port only, although you may be able to reduce the price a bit, by sharing a container
