Hello

Looking to get a pick up style truck, Mitz L200, Nissan Navara style etc

Looks like the Nissan have a pretty awful reliabilty record?

Looking for something around 3000 to 4000 pound

Any other makes etc worth thinking about?

Many thanks

Dave

The Nissan has very short service intervals and I suspect reliability issues come from not keeping to those schedules.

Everyone seems to overlook the Ford Ranger but it is a fair tool.

my personal money would be on a L200 or a Ford Ranger for the price range you have, avoid nissans 2002- 2006 (they were the years where reliabilty was a real issue even the new one have suspect clutchs i believe)

L200 in your price range look better IMO than the pre 2007 ranger, that would be in your price bracket but they are good work horses.

they both tow about the same weight and drive about the same. for me it would be which one was the right one to buy ie condition mileage etc.

we had an l200 untill my brother wrote it off. tbh it was terrible, turning circle of an oil tanker and we all hated it. we've now got a 2007 ford ranger and its fantastic in comparison. would definately reccomend it!

don't forget the yank pickup's (arguably the best vehicles to come out of America)

the easiest to acquire in this country would probably be either the dodge ram or ford F-150.

You can get the dodge with a diesel though and it makes an excellent tow car.

RAM 1500 has a tow rating of 10,450lbs and a payload rating of 1,900lbs
RAM 2500 has a tow rating of 13,450lbs and a payload rating of 3,160lbs
RAM 3500 has a tow rating of 17,600lbs and a payload rating of 5,130lbs

whichever suits your needs best

At work we ran 6 navaras c.2006 models up to about 100k each without any reliability problems. One of our guys towed a caravan and said it felt like it wasn't even there! They were all autos and apart from having to park them, I was quite fond of them. Fuel economy was pretty poor mind.

In comparison the rangers we have are nasty agricultural things

The older shape L200's are pretty horrific on fuel and sluggish. If you can live with the poor economy then they're not too bad but make sure you get one with a higher spec like the "Animal" model as the boggo ones are a bit sparse inside. I believe the newer ones are much better though if your budget can stretch.

I had an 02 plate Ford Ranger for three years and it is a very good truck apart from the following;

1) I've worked on ships with a better turning circle, everything is a 10 point turn.
2) The windscreen washer bottle is the size of an atom and requires constent refilling.
3) Don't get one without ABS as mine was on standard tyres without ABS and was prone to locking up at any given moment.(post 03 I think come with ABS as standard)

Having said all of the above I would have another if I needed this type of vehicle again.

L200s are cack had one as a works vehicle, worse car ever, everyone drove the 6 year old ford ranger instead, and it had been through the wars like no car i've ever seen and everyone still liked it.

What is the reason for looking at a Pickup apart from the towing OP? These trucks didn't get "fashionable" until the earlier 00's, so they have not moved on technically for many years, hence the cart suspension etc.

If you don't need the open truck back, then you could get quite a lot of Disco in your budget - they are great tow cars.

I have to agree with much of what has alreayd been written about the L200. They are st. We had one at work from new between 2004-2007 and it was terrible. It kept throwing belts and being towed to the dealer that never, ever, ever had any parts.

The money the ops talking won't get him a D40 and the D22's were 6 or 8000 intervals until they got to 50 or 60,000.Then they just blew up.biggrin

Good point, D22's were crap, no argument.

D40 wise, they are about at sensible money now, there's this one in classifieds for £5,999, bit of haggling would make it a bargain.
