I remember queuing up for hours in Nottingham years ago for him to sign his autobiography. Think it was the period of time he held both the F1 and Indy championships at the same time.

okie592 - i think your comment re mansell being an arse is way out of line.

i had many dealings with him in the 80's & early 90's as i worked for one of his personal sponsors.

nothing was too much trouble for him - if he was asked to do a personal appearance for the sponsors or his fans he would do just that.

i have photo's of him attending a motorsport evening in a cold exhibition hall one dismal, dark night in birmingham when he was driving for lotus.

did he complain? no. did he whinge that it was a pain in the arse? no. was he sullen, rude & unhelpful as many f1 drivers are now (witness the likes of raikkonen, alonso, shcumacher etc etc for examples of that) no he wasnt.

he arrived early, he was extremely polite for all those who attended the evening & stayed behind for almost 2 hours after the evening had officially finished to chat to the fans, sign autographs & have his photo taken with anyone who asked.

during his f1 & indy car career he was extremely determined, focused and driven by the will to succeed. what is wrong with that?

i dont remember prost being slagged off in the same way nigel was & nor was senna given such a hard time.

they were seen as being trying to do their best however whenever nigel was in that kind of determined mood he got slagged off for it.

even now the likes of nigel roebuck will slag him off at every available opportunity for being a whinger, a complainer etc - which is not true.

maybe you should get out to le mans next month & see what level of support he gets. i can tell you it will be huge so give him the respect that he deserves.

I think okie and fatboy are seeing 2 sides of the same coin - surely if you are working for his sponsors, he is going to do all he can as he needs the money...

I see he keeps on wearing his Sunseeker cap so he keeps that sponsorship topped-up. No grey areas with Mansell, either you like or dislike - I could find better things to do...

Why would anyone want to meet that bunch of idiots, my step dad used to work for him at the mansell raceway in dunkswell, and with no word of warning made him redundent, so he lost his company house and car.

having met him many times i would like to say what a arse

Having known the man personally for many years I can concur with the sentiment, do yourself a favour and don't bother.

I WON!

It was a real treat to get to see behind the scenes of a race team, meet all the crew and drivers.

The passenger laps will stay with me for life - the adrenaline made me physically shake but I didnt feel worried for a moment...total confidence in the drivers.

But what made the day as much as anything was the PH guys and my co-winners...great bunch of guys to spend the day with and I hope our paths cross again soon...maybe w/e 12-13th June!

Would love to see any photo's you got as most of my efforts on my BlackBerry were...well, average!

James

Glad you had a good time, I agree that it was a fantastic day and it was really nice to meet you all. It's always a joy to meet PH readers, you can be guaranteed that they will be nice chaps smile

Thanks to Beechdean Mansell for allowing us exclusive access to their shakedown session, truly a once in a lifetime opportunity, and not one that I will forget in a hurry.
