Hi all. Been looking at getting a VX220 for some time now but really strugge to fit in them due to my fondness of all things fried and battered resulting in an arse that J-Lo would be proud of. More recently, I have been thinking of alternatives and a mates recent purchase of a 1999 BMW 528 has started me thinking;

I could afford an M5 on my budget (albeit with high mileage and a late 90's model) - is this a ridiculous alternative to a VX? I know they are completely different beasts, but the thought of wafting around most of the time, then planting it whenever the feeling takes me seems like a really good idea!!

Has anyone got any compelling arguements as to why an M5 would be a good/bad idea?!!!

It was just an idea really, but I can just picture myself in one!!!

The VX220 is not fast in a straight line. Well it is fairly quick, but that's not what makes it a good car. If you enjoy being shoved into the back of your seat, an M5 would be a fine choice. If you want a sports car, it wouldn't.

Could your budget stretch to an E46 M3 with higher mileage?

That would be a better choice, get a nice half way point between an M5 and the VX.

I'd argue that the M3 is nowhere near half way between the M5 and the VX220, being much closer to the M5 end of the spectrum. A Boxster would be about half way IMHO and would probably be a very good choice for the OP.

Some good ideas here people, keep 'em coming!!!

M3 was another option that I had considered, but I don't own any Burberry and prefer red wine to Stella from a can, so I think that counts me out! (only kidding, they are nice and I did seriously look at them!)

The VX is my dream car and has been for years so I would much prefer to stick with that and lose the lard, but an alternative car would be a quick fix to get me into something with some poke.

Is your problem with fitting in the VX220 just limited to getting in and out, or are you uncomfortable once you're actually inside? If it's just getting in and out, that's a knack that comes with practice.

No mate, it's with the steering wheel. Once I'm in (fine with that part) the door sills are too wide for me to (comfortably) fit my right leg between the wheel and the door. I can get a spacer to go behind the wheel which will eliminate the problem, but I just don't want to have to tit about with it too much - plus I think a spacer would make the wheel a bit too close to me to be able to drive properly

VX 220 = "chalk"
E39 = "cheese"

Have a look at C5 Corvette if you want a reliable sports car about 10 years old with decent creature comforts.
