Chaps

As i've mentioed i am currently trying to sell my Porsche 928, it's been on PH for 6-8 weeks i guess and on ebay 3 (the same) times. The first time it fetched over my reserve and i was chuffed but the "buyer" was a timewaster... On both of the subsequent listings it has failed to reach the reserve by around 500 quid, the reserve was 3000...far from greedy for the car i feel! Any way i'm just getting really fed up now, i've got interest from a guy at the mo who may go cash and a P/X put i'd rather cash and the car gone!

I'm not having to sell the car to put food on the table but because i just want something else, an XJS, and need the 928 gone to free the pennies and the space! I paif 2k for the car 15 months ago and have spent nearly 6 on it!!!! so i'm really loathed to let it go for less than 3k... frown

Other option is put it on axle stands and forget about it for 6 months....

This one?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1580117.htm

IMHO, the advert could do with a few more pics . . . . . would suggest as well as the arty ones, two clear profile shots (left and right sides) rear, front, inside shot of boot, interior front and rear and of course a nice shot of a nice clean engine bay smile have to say doesnt look bad value at £3k'ish

The car is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. So you can either drop the price or hope that someone else who's willing to pay more comes along.

That's how selling works I'm afraid!

I hope this makes sense, from my experience if you buy an older car in reasonable condition and then spend £xxxx on it making it really nice, you never seem to get any money back on it. You will probably end up selling it for what you paid for it.

Shame but true.

I'd stick a new MOT on it, to give the buyer extra piece of mind. Long MOT vs shortish MOT is a big selling point.

I'd also get the oil leak seen to, and see if you can sort the electric seat. If these are really as tiny issues as you suggest, why wouldn't you fix them!?

I'd also knock off the rev counter bounce from your list of problems. All the gauges on 928's play up at some point; often with regular use they free up again. Mine shows 1/4 of a tank of fuel when empty, and the oil pressure gauge only starts working when tapped or goes on a run, with an occasional tendancy to stick at '5'.

I also wouldn't mention the tyres in the advert - it's not really an issue. If the buyer is interested he'll ask when phoning - and for most buyers, you expect to go tyre shopping with a new purchase, and the tyres make a useful small bargaining chip. But if you're onto the bargaining stage, the sale is close and the buyer is standing with you, not viewing an advert & has seen the car.

V. v. tempted as it goes - but unable to make an offer - got to sell one of mine first. 928 do rock though!

Not trying to be aggrivating, but the photos make it look like a bit of a lemon - paint looks flat, almost like it's been badly sprayed. That, with the lack of the "other" flank, doesn't help.

IMO, give it a once over with the autoglym, then take it out on a sunny day, up to a nice view with no confusing background, and take the "normal" photos people would like to see:

Both flanks, front and rear. 3/4 shots to make the car look nice lets you combine 2 photos if you like. For the interior, a good hoover and the wheel set straight ahead.

Finally, there are clearly some issues with the car at present. They're fairly minor, so reassure people by listing the previous history and details of bills etc. Some people list these over time to prove mileage - would be a handy trick since you have a new dash.

Hope you have more luck with the next batch of ads, irrespective if you think the above is sane or not =)

There's a particular element in your advert which really puts me off – not just your advert, but any advert that does it – namely the listing of the 'little, minor, cheap problems that take minutes to fix', but the current owner can't be bothered to do them. This always makes me think they're actually bigger jobs than they seem to be and I'll end up shelling out loads more for these little fixes.

If they're that easy/quick/cheap to fix then do them while you're waiting to sell it.

Have to agree here.
I don't want to buy a car with lots of little faults that are an easy fix.
Fix them.
The buyer will be aware that a twenty plus year old car will have the odd bit here and there that will need doing.
But to list them would but me off.
Eight pictures as included in the advert so I would use them?

Hope it sells.

Agree with a lot of the comments here. Definitely needs more and better photos. Don't get too downhearted though - it's a bit of a niche car, and while it may be cheap to buy it's not cheap to run and potentially a minefield, so that's going to limit your buyers. Took me a while to sell my '84 911, but that's just gone. All it needs is for the right person to come along. Hell, if I wasn't hell-bent on reducing my own fleet I'd be interested. biggrin

I'd just hang on in there, at the end of the day there arent hundreds of potential 928 buyers looking every day.

I'm not a photography expert, but the interior pic seems to make it look shabby, when i'm wagering its not, the sunlight and shadows dont do the interior justice.

A few better pics, less words and I think you'll be sorted.

Good luck !

Also OP, small point but:

"The 928 is my weekend car and has done very few miles since I've *owner her."

  • owned
"Anyway, I could talk about the old girl all day but I will give you some useful information. To start with here is a summary of work I have done on the car since I've owner* it;"

  • Owned it
Sorry, PH pedantic police at work, but hopefully my early comment shows I mean well.

Very true.

In the current climate with big tax rises just around the corner few punters are daft enough to buy a big V8 with heavy fuel consumption and hefty maintenance costs. You can only sell for market price and the market is moving away from that type of car.

Still; it could be worse. It could be 1974 and you might be trying to sell an E-Type Jag or a Jensen Interceptor.....

You can't say it's had a pampered life and then say it's got a number of minor niggles/cheap fixes that haven't been done, put bluntly it makes you look like a bullstter.Give it 12 months MOT a few hours elbow grease and get all the "cheap" niggles done, and then put it up for £4500 (yes I do mean more). You might be surprised how much more confidence prospective buyers will have in it.

More photos needed. If I am looking to buy a car I know what it looks like but I want to see what YOUR car looks like. I see many adverts on PH where they post 2/3 photos and lots of blub but sometimes those 2/3 photos are rubbish. Too small, rubbish quality, you get no idea what the car is really like.

If you were local I would give you a hand cleaning it up, wash, clay, polish, wax etc I showed my 60 yo dad how to clay bar and present a car properly, the last car he sold went to the first person who looked at it in the flesh.

Or if it on Ebay, "only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it" during that listing, what is it these days 7/8 listing?

I saw this last week and half considered it, just as a second car to buzz around in over the summer. What put me off? Three photos - it says you don't care. A dozen photos, good quality, nice sunny day after 5 hours washing, polishing and waxing. Step to it! smile

Just a BTW - I did just that and stuck my old Pug here and on ebay, loads of photos and informative text. Got 8 (I think) responses here and 36 bids on ebay, ended auction early and sold for more than book price. Fair enough, more people want Pugs than Porches but you could sell that in a week if you sorted out the ad.
