Went on the Audi configurator, specced up a 1.4TSi S-Line A1, with all the options.

£25,005!!!

For a 122bhp Polo sized car.

£25,000 will get you a pretty well specced up Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works!

In fact, just specced it up - a JCW with 210bhp, in red, with white roof & stripes, Chilli pack and Media pack - £24,995.

Why in God's name would you pay that much for an A1?

A normal 185bhp Cooper S with spec over and above that of the A1 is c.£3,000 cheaper.

Madness.

You'd be a fool to buy that of course, but the 1.2 TFSI base model is £13k. Stick a few basic extras on it and you've got a 'prestige' car the size of an older A3 for £15k What is wrong with that? People don't need leather, SatNav, Xenons on this class of car. It is bound to cost more than the equivalent Polo.

At least that's the top of the tree car though.

The A1 is a Polo in a posh frock, and is absurdly more expensive than its rivals.

I'm all for VW's in posh frocks too (TT), but this takes the preverbial.

Oh, and that £25K didn't even include full leather. It was S-Line half leather.

Slap the 4 rings on a car and it looks like you can have a £10k premium over the Polo.
Surely even the A3 isn't that costly with the bigger engine?

Options are where the money is these days. They make some money on the base car, but when people get carried away with options then the manufacturers make a fortune. With credit cheap, its an easy one to get carried away with.

Its like these sat nav systems (which tend to be good BTW), but quite how Audi can justify nearly 2k for one I am not too sure. Even a top of the line aftermarket one will top out at just over a grand for an all-singing-all-dancing model that does everything and plays DVD's and hooks up to iPods - which are extra on the Audi systems. Madness, utter madness.

And then the second hand market hits you on resale and makes your car worth less if DONT have the extras!!!

There are plenty of cars you can add every extra to and make look overpriced.

Just to put a little reality back to the topic, the 1.4tsi S-Line A1 has a list price of £16,225.

I think this was the case a couple of years ago, but the Germans have upped their game on nav/media systems.

I agree they are still very expensive, but personally I hate having something stuck to my windscreen, tempting a scrote to smash my window to search for it.

In addition, the media system in my BM comes (included in the initial price) with 24x7 human concierge who I can speak to, who sends addresses and telephone numbers to my car, I can send addresses to the car from any Google map pc, it sucks music off my cd's onto a hard drive, and gets track info from the web, and I can get news, weather and google search from within the car..

Show me a Tom Tom which does that!

Still expensive but £10k of options is a bit mad isn't it. Then again, a friend's ex girlfriend has an Audi A3 that was £30k+ IIRC, with every toy on it. It's a diesel too, 2litre.

You'd be an idiot to tick all the options boxes on any car, right? You can get a Ford Focus for £13k... or you can spec it up to over £30k.

Even more of a joke is that Skoda announced their Fabia vRS pricing - 180bhp 1.4 TSI, with a DSG gearbox, 17" wheels, sports seats, aircon, multifunction wheel, etc - £15,700 OTR.

I don't really know why you'd want it to do that to be honest. I can plug my phone into my cassette deck (yes really!) and I have hands-free voice calls, MP3s, digital radio and even turn-by-turn audio for sat-nav. Phone cost £130.

I drove an '09 Audi A4 last year with the top of the range sat nav it it was just dreadful. It didn't even recognise a one way street and the roads through Richmond Park, which I know for a fact my £100 TomTom does.

And the best thing is, in 5 years time it will only cost me £100 to get a brand-new system with all that the future holds...

For over £2k for some of these systems, I'd want it to do more than just the music.

It is interesting looking at how VAG organise their profit taking from model to model. As always the acid test is will customers swallow it? It seems they do.

It can't be a surprise that Skoda Customers continually put the brand towards the top of satisfaction surveys, when they're paying double digit discounts against the equivalent Audi or VW with much the same technology and specification.

You have to wonder, if brand image wasn't the deal breaker it is and people were more educated in the technology sharing, how would Audi even survive?

I didn't mean a Tom Tom - I was mainly referring to the top of the line double DIN systems from people like Pioneer and Kenwood. These are systems that have touch interface, remote control, iPod interface, moving 3d maps, millions of POI's etc etc etc... oh and DVD playback, local HD for storage and support all of the external systems you could want.

So on a basic level its more feature rich than the systems you get on modern cars, but lacks the fully integrated nature of them. Is that worth the money? If you have it then great, but it makes a difficult buy when you are clearly spending a lot of money on something that is available off-the-shelf.

Oh, and I do have a fully integrated satnav in my car - it came with it as standard - and its great.

hehe
