I am a named driver on 3 cars on their 'Masterpiece' (i think?) policy. When you read about the policy it basically says that you are insured on any other car fully comp apart from family members and that anyone can drive your cars fully comp as long as they have your permission. All this sounds great but if a hypothetical friend of mine turns up in a Veyron and says take it for a spin how do I prove that I am fully comp insured on it? And vice versa how does a friend of mine prove that he is insured on my car if he is stopped? The policy document just says policy holder, named drivers etc etc don't think it mentions anyone else that could be insured?

We use Chubb. Never had this situation in the past but I believe you'd just explain the policy to the copper, he would then call the insurance company and confirm the coverage of the policy.

If the insurance company were shut then I suspect he'd probably want evidence of the policy (either via a producer or to be shown a copy of the policy).

Overall if you had a particularly militant copper and didn't have your documents to hand you could be unlucky, but it hasn't happened to any of my family yet in IIRC 3 years of coverage, and we drive other cars and let others drive ours on a fairly regular basis.

ETA - Unless it's an emergency we also usually phone them to give details of any driver that we want to cover on our cars or a car we want to drive just to confirm and avoid any possibility of being uninsured.

I guess I may be being too pedantic but its sods law sometimes isn't it? Also do you know anything about a free breakdown cover they provide? Or do you pay extra for this?

To be honest I'm not really sure, the old man looks after everything as they give us a better deal if we put in my cheaper cars along with some of the nicer stuff.

We all have a separate AA membership though, so probably not

but would reckon they would allow me on this policy since my car is below the 30k value?

They come and visit you at home, to suss you out. It's invitation only.

If the 740i is new then they might well do.

As Soovy says invite only-but having a valuable or "nice" car doesn't mean you get an invite either. My broker told me that even high nett worth people don't always get in either.

Oh and answer to the original question, yes the driver or any named drivers can drive anything.

Its a really nice policy, peace of mind.

But if you are stopped how can I PROVE I am insured to drive your Veyron and if you are stopped driving mine how can you PROVE that you are fully comp?

Keep a photocopy of the policy. That's what my old man has.
