What have you seen as alternatives to the old BMC 1800 lump used in the MGB?
Is there anything that is considered a simple swap?
The V8 Rover lumps is the obvious first one to spring to mind but in fact they are not that straight forward on an earlier car and require changes to the floorpan and bulkhead.

You need to mug a kid in a Corsa and "nick 'is red top". Use the Opel Manta 5-speed Getrag, and you will have a good combination. The GM Astra/Cavalier/Calibra Cosworth designed lump is a common choice in engine swaps, regardless of the badge on the car. Some also cite the Ford Duratec, it's a good engine, but not like the GM unit.
Putting a K-series in is folly. The B-series is much more reliable!!
As you mentioned - V8 - use the Chevy LS1. It doesn't weigh much more than the Rover, but is more compact, 5.7L, and in Corvette trim 345hp. Grin factor 10. Plenty of "cut-out" offers on Fleabay (ebay.com rather than .co.uk) complete with 6-speed gearbox, sometime running gear with rear axle.
