Perhaps someone can enlighten me... drivers who, when travelling along a 30 around down, dip the clutch and start blipping the throttle. Not for a gearchange or anything, just a constant, "vrm... vrm... vrm... vrm..." until they've gone out of earshot. What's that all about?

I'd thought at first it might be a, "check out my modifed exhaust" thing but more often than not it's drivers in completely standard cars.

Anyone know? Is there some sort of local poor fuel economy competition I've somehow missed?

Must be related to the guys on scooters where I live. They like to lift off the gas a couple of times when pulling away from the lights; to imply a gearchange, presumably...

Cadence thinking more like. Perhaps if their father had employed cadence penetration, we might have been spared this form of 'tardish scopery.

Not heard any car drivers do this...but bikers seem to do it all the time, mainly at junctions - not cool, pointless and bloody annoying.
(I'm am a biker before biker types kick off - I've never felt the need to do this apart from on a 50cc two stroke to keep it in the power band)

Some people just like to make a lot of noise.
There's a guy in my neighborhood who just can't help himself. He has a Harley Dyna Wide-Glide with a very stupid exhaust that makes the most offensive, very loud farting noise. It ticks-over perfectly well, but he just HAS to keep blipping the damn thing - unfortunately, he also has a Harley D Ford F-150 with an aftermarket exhaust, that is equally anti-social. I was out walking the dog yesterday afternoon when he came past. Remember, his truck is an auto. As he rolled past, windows down, looking at me to check that I was looking at him, he shifted from drive into neutral and blipped the gas a few times, stuck it back in drive and carried on. It humbled me.

I have to say I am guilty of having done this myself, but I am at heart a child and a motorbike engine being revved gently when stationary with a stainless exhaust makes me smile.

I was next to a very nice Ducati (996R maybe) at the lights in Bloomsbury, and he kept blipping the throttle as it seemed it would stall at idle?
