How do you buy a car long distance? V5 etc.
Discussion
I'm in the near future going to be buying a car long distance via ebay. It's too far away (and not worth enough) to go and actually see/collect in person, plus it has no MOT or tax and so I'd need to pay for a courier/man with flatbed to bring it home anyway.
What's the procedure for buying a car this way? How do you get the V5 etc? How do you handle the money? Pay upfront and hope they don't do a runner; pay a deposit and give the courier the remaining balance to pay for you; get the courier to pay the money upfront and then reimburse them on arrival? Bit lost here.
Just looking for advice on how to handle the transaction, not the pros and cons of buying a car unseen please!

there are loads of scenarios here, if it only a few hundred quid take your chance, pay pal the guy, pay the recovery guy one way, when he turns up with the car pay him the balance for his time.
if its a bag 'o' shizer, give him bad feedback and scrap it.
if its a few grand, leave it alone!

Thanks for the help but there's still a bit I'm confused about - how do you handle the signing over of the V5? Obviously when buying in person you would fill out the new keeper supplement and your details on the main V5 then be on your way, then the seller would put the old V5 in the post to DVLA. Would the delivery guy just take the blank new keeper section with him and give it to me? Then I'd have to ring the seller with my details - or something like that?
Or would they give me the whole V5 and trust me to fill out and send it off myself?

50/50 trust there dude, email the guy your address and contact details, then give the recovery driver the same address, when he gets there show the paperwork and if they match up he should feel confident filling in the logbook on your behalf, get him to sign the logbook and just wright your name in capitals, and the recovery man takes the new keepers slip back with the car.Or would they give me the whole V5 and trust me to fill out and send it off myself?

Have the seller fill in the V5, giving the new owner section to the driver picking the thing up . . . . . . . not difficult is it
Alright, alright, point taken! Call me stupid but I'm just a bit hesitant about some bloke I don't know collecting a car that has already been paid for, with its complete V5, and just having to trust that it will arrive at my door at the end of the day - and not vanish to some gypsy campsite in the middle of nowhere. Sure it's only a couple of hundred quid but it's the principle!

if everyone was so trusting, some people like everything in black and white, the seller may require proper proof of new owner, not some dude in a flat bed truck with a scrap of paper.

choose a reputable recovery man who lives in your area, look in the yellow pages, then it wont be some bloke you just spotted driving a flat bed

I bought my Land Rover sight unseen, bar some photos, from Belfast, was living near Dartford, Kent at the time. Paid the fella via Bank transfer, he filled in the V5 and sorted that out.
He sorted out the transportation and it arrived a few weeks later. It was later than planned due to a ferocious Irish Sea for a week or so grounding ships. So this delayed things, I did think occasionally that he'd done a runner but there was no need to worry, as it turned up in the end.
So no real problems in my experience.
