"Intentionally losing control of a vehicle"

... and I thought the UK was draconian.
Understand they've got to make an example but this is a bit too far.

"I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police.
"What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."
Wimp.
Can you imagine F1 drivers of old saying any such thing? The Aussies sound like they have even more of a nanny-state over there than we do over here. The coppers that pulled him should hang their heads in shame.

LOL. I don't think that Lewis Hamilton actually ''lost'' control of the vehicle.
Yes, sounds like a simple minded plod (and local politicians if I remember the case correctly) being over officious and making a total arse of themselves.Boycott Australia for holidays and send an email to the high commission explaining why you're doing so and I expect we'd find the same officials colleting litter off the track for next year's event.

"Australian Police arrest Black man Shocker!"
Poor choice by them. He'll be convicted in his absence, and presumably be unable to drive on Aus roads in the future. Of more pressing concern is whether they will then let a convicted individual into the country early next year. Having seen the way their customs officials view everyone not 100% Aussie, I'd be a touch concerned if I was Martin Whitmarsh!

I think it was Henry Blofeld who, upon being asked at Australian immigration whether he had any criminal convictions, said:"Australian Police arrest Black man Shocker!"

"My dear boy, I didn't realise it was still compulsory."
Corker!

The Aussies police are just trying to help Australian sport by not letting Foreign competitors in to the country. They need all the help they can get at the minute, they're not that bad at F1, but as a country can't ride motorbikes. Or play Cricket. Their swimming is a bit lacking too. Why is it that professional drivers, who know more about the physics of car control than anyone else on the road, are considered to be 'dangerous' by the clueless?
It must be an ignorance thing, like these people who don't trust scientists because they don't understand them or their mindselt, but who will fall for the whole 'pentapeptides' spiel when being sold snakeoil face cream, because it sounds like an authoritative little bit of knowledge being given to them for free (except that it's made-up b
ks and it's being given to them for the price of their snakeoil).

Er, as discussed before, I'm not sure that putting 'racing driver' on an insurance proposal form results in any sort of a discount. Indeed if i had to, i'd wager that their claims record would be worse.

It was a dream come true for the Aussie police. Apparently, there's a big drive to clamp down on 'dickeheads' driving like that (to the point they use that very word in their advertising campaign), and to clip the wings of an F1 driver must have been a dream come true for them.
Was it perhaps a well engineered publicity stunt in support of their campaign?

I was in Oz at the time and can assure you it was big news and very embarrassing for Mercedes, McLaren and Lewis. There is a perceived, and possibly real problem in Australia of young drivers hooning it. Indeed every day in the evening news, and in every morning news programme there were stories of x number of fatal accidents that/the previous day. And the numbers were a bit of a surprise to be honest. Maybe there is simply a heightened sense of road deaths being newsworthy, but I remember at the time doing a bit of simple maths and thinking "crikey, they do seem to kill themselves with aplomb over here." Funnily enough, the other national obsession is boat people arriving on their northern shores. I'd've suspected a free Holden for each new arrival would've solved the problem nicely.
In the end though, they are a nation state and they can make the laws as they please. He was a bit of a twerp, admitted such and should expect to be made an example of. Whether that will necessarily mean a stiffer penalty we shall see.
