Brother in law has a bmw x5 as his everyday car and his fiancee has a 1-series. They're looking for something as a toy for weekends.

It absolutely doesn't have to be practical. 2 seats and small boot is fine.

It doesn't have to be super-reliable although it would be nice to be able to do 200 miles in it over a weekend. It will be stored in an insulated garage.

Fuel economy is not an issue.

It doesn't even have to be that fast and it won't be used on track.

It must:

Look good.

Sound good.

Make him want to take it for a drive on a nice day.

Be "interesting".

I've suggested such things as the old, unpopular-ish lambos (like the urraco) and ferraris/dinos (he seems keen on these ideas), a porsche 928 (too fugly), an esprit (keen again) and even the jag xkr (too daily-mail).

Any ideas?

TR4?

or a TR6

neither of which are that "exotic" but other than that meet the criteria perfectly.

Look great, sound amazing, top down fun.

eta: both of which are far more expensive than I expected them to be!

Depending on how brave you feel a Cerbera might fit the bill.

Most of these cars listed will be nothing more than a headache to run.

Surely, the idea is to enjoy the drive, not constantly worry about it breaking down?

Modern car, lots of fun, wont let down, not depreciate too much, enjoyable drive.....

Ashamed to say a trev didn't even cross my mind! Good call!

Vx220 is interesting but I suspect he would rather go for a big engined cruiser rather than a sharp and focussed thing like a vx. I've owned a vxt and loved it but didn't really consider it "exotic"...

Maybe something yank would suit... Vette? Camaro? stang?

It's amazing what you can't get for 10k, as perfect as it'd be, I don't know if you'd find a decent Cerbera for that money? A Maserati 3200 definitely sounds a nice idea, but I'm too British and would say a Chimaera or a Griffith.

Both of these look a little less middle-age-aristocracy than the Maser, too, IMHO

this has got to be one of the most exotic " Limited edition 60th anniversary Mazda Cosmo RE-130 Rotary Coupe for sale.
As far as I am able to tell only a handful of this edition were sold, and only 2 are now KNOWN to be on the road worldwide, this one and one in Japan, 2 more were known to have existed in Japan but have not been heard of for many years. (the only other known 60th anniversary car can be seen on youtube)"
