What car should I buy? I can't decide!

Hi there, i'm new here and joined as part of my new car hunt. Currently drive a 97 Almera SRi 1.6 which I bought for £675 on 56,000miles as a NCB builer. I'm 19, 2 years driving experience and 1 years NCB. Was going to get an almera GTi, but decided i'm sick of them.
Basically, I'm in a fix. Budget is anywhere between £2000-£3000. I'd like a quicker car, but also a nicer car, yet I don't seem to be able to achieve this. I can afford group ins 14 cars TPFT only really. Hence I either get an old fast cheap car for 1K, or if I want a more modernish car for £3k it has to be slow, since fully comp is required based on the money spent.
I was wondering if anyone could suggest any compromise? A more modern looking car inside and outside that has more than my current 100bhp, yet won't cost me incredibly amounts to insure?
