Hi,

I'm just about to buy a car which will be parked in the underground car park which is part of my block of flats in central London.

Does anyone know if the car should be insured as being garaged or off street parking? And if off street how much this might add to the insurance premium?

My brother looked into this a couple of years ago and I think the insurance company said that it was not classified as being garaged unless you had CCTV and a 24hr security guard (which I don't), but I guess that could vary by insurer.

Just want to make sure I have everything straight and correct, don't want to give the insurer any scope to wriggle out if I need to make a claim in the future.

Thanks
James

Just ask your insurer what they would class it as, my company though has an option for your situation it would be classed as residential parking if only the tenants of your building have access, if a public one goes under carpark,it will vary per insurer though!!.

Why don't you just ring the insurer and ask them? They're the only people who'll be able to give you the definitive answer after all. I imagine that it will depend on how access to the garage is controlled, but only they will be able to tell you what their definition is.

It'll be off street from my experience. Insurers will use any excuse to put you in the more expensive category..
