Yep, it's a 'What Car?'
Discussion
I'm off to Aberystwyth uni at the end of the summer, and I've decided that come September I will take the MGB off the road, hole it up in the garage of my gran's 'holiday home' nearby and do as thorough restoration as I can over the next few years.
That means I'll need a car for:
a) Getting to the garage ~15 miles away
b) Getting home as and when ~ 250 miles away
c) Going for hoons on a Sunday morning through Snowdonia
I'll be working all summer so I reckon I can afford £1000 at a very maximum for a car which will do all of the above. Due to the MG coming off the road the insurance on that will drop from £870 to £35 (!), and I will have a years no claims as an additional driver on my parent's Direct Line policy (which means I'll be taking out cover on the new car with Direct Line also).
However, I refuse on principal to pay more than the car is worth on insurance, so I'll have to rule out anything that's typically 'young driver' or 'prestige' - even E30 316is and 190Es are off the scale in terms of insurance. I'd also rather not go for another classic car at the moment; one project car is more than enough! Economy isn't a massive concern (If I run out of money, I stop driving, simple) and neither is practicality. Finally, an MX-5 is a no-go too due to insurance; trust me, I've left no stone unturned in the search for cheap cover!
Some of my thoughts so far:
Thanks in advance,
Ben

Some of my thoughts so far:
- Peugeot 306 D Turbo - cheap insurance, cheap to run, but it is a diseasal.
- Renault Megane Coupe 2.0 - bewilderingly cheap to insure
- Ford Capri 1.6 - I'm a Ford guy through and through, but possibly a bit underpowered?
- SAAB 900 2.0 - Mid-ninties model. Old man-ish?
Thanks in advance,
Ben

fiesta zetec s ticks all the boxes in my book (i bought one for simular job), when looking for them the main consideration should be rust dont worry about milage as engines are very cheap... its all about condition...
That would be nice, but I've only got £1000 to spend!bdr529 said:
What about 2.8 capri? Or will insurance be too steep?
It's actually not that much more than a 1.6, but what with the rising prices on the Old Ford front, you'd be hard pushed to find one that won't need a fair bit of work doing for £1000. Though a 2.8i if definitely on my 'need to own' list for the future.Oh interesting, I can get a Mazda MX-5 insured for just over £1000 if I wait until February next year, when I would have had my licence for a year...hmmm.
On the same topic, if I were to buy a snotter of a car to tide me over for a few months, there would be no issues changing to a different car half way through the policy?

I know they are pretty standard and seen as boring but the OP only needs a cheap car that OK for the odd lond distance drive.

I think it will be priced on your circumstances on the date you took out the policy. As in for the 12 months you would be paying for someone who hadn't had their license for a year until renewal time. And this would also have a knock on effect for when you have the license for 2 years, 3 years etc. You would be able to change the car, but I suspect it would cost you more than if you waited until February to take the policy out.On the same topic, if I were to buy a snotter of a car to tide me over for a few months, there would be no issues changing to a different car half way through the policy?
Saying that, waiting until February is a bloody long time! And probably wouldn't be much good for your needs.
There may be some insurers where this might not be the case, I'm just speaking from my experience
