I realise they're probably very illegal, but I'm struggling to find any information on border colour legalities.

No restrictions on border colour IIRC but the GB logo needs to have a blue background I think.

I think you need contact details of the plate issuer on the bottom too?

And they should show a postcode.

there is either illegal or legal, its not a sliding scale.

I might be wrong on these, but being pedantic:

- Must be solid blue background, not green
- I think the blue must run the full height of the plate, and not have a border around it
- "GB" is wrong font
- "GB" and stars must be white on the front plates
- Should have postcode (might just not be on the web preview)

I think standard plates look better. IMHO.

But I don't think that the GB is a legal requirement for a numberplate. Whilst it might not be any good as an EU country badge I don't think it invalidates the rest of the plate.

I thought it would be something like this, where did you get this info from?

In all fairness I've never heard of anyone get pulled for plates, even German-style show-plates or those absurd barely readable scripted ones or ones mis-spaced/covered in mounting bolts to spell something else.

If I was a copper I'd absolutely love handing out fixed penalties to monkeys with illegible number plates.

You obviously dont spend any time on VAG forums, people always getting pulled for them ... including me.

OP - Doubt they would get you into any trouble

I had german style pressed plates on a Golf for a couple of years and never got pulled for them even when stopped by the Police for random breath tests over the christmas holidays.

If you act like a dick I would imagine there is more chance of them trying to find something to do you for though.

yes

Just as 31mph in a 30 limit is as much speeding as 40mph in a 30 limit.

yes

Absolutely right. Also a kite mark too??

yes

You wouldn't get pulled for them, and you'd have to encounter a very eagle eyed MOT tester to kick up a fuss too.

I got pulled for Italian style plates just outside Cadwell Park on Saturday by a motorbike cop. The cop said he wouldn't have minded but I didn't drive an Italian car which is funny as I've got an Abarth.

I doubt he'd get an MOT with them either.

This is all academic if the car was registered before the latest round of number plates laws came into force, as it's entirely possible that the plates were made before that date, and are therefore legal. wink
