I need something to keep me busy so thinking of buying an old car and upgrading engine suspension brakes erc. for a budget weekend toy, this will be my first attempt at doing something on this scale myself so a something with straightforward engine swap is what i have in mind.

I used to own a rover 200 bubble which i could have put a 220 Turbo engine in but rather try something else.

Main things is that the car needds to be cheap to buy
Parts available
Not too complex so looking for something from mid ninetees
to work on
Any ideas???

I know you said 90's
But a old mini is a good shout parts are very cheap and they are numerous suppliers. Also in terms of modification only the sky is the limit they are a lot of off the shelf parts you can buy from stage 1 kits up to subframe to fit a 2.0 vauxhall engine if you want smile Should be able to get one that is decent for around 1k wont need to do too much work body wise then just a few repairs then get it sprayed and stick a big engine in it job done.

Seconded, I'm restoring a MK1 MR2 at the moment and can't decide what I want to do with the engine, leave, rebuild, swap for a 20v version or do a mk1.5 conversion or a v6.... so many choice so much information

to be honest, easy to work on and >mid 90s are not mutually compatible as you get all sort sof electronic guff on new cars that you just dont want to have to worry about.

i think an MGB is a good idea, the guy in octane has done loads of work to his, although he has kept the orignal engine, a k-series conversion is pretty easy. could be a good sleeper....

I'd think your rover will probably be a good first project. Think the K Series engines are quite good to learn with for a beginner. Slip a 1.8 engine from ZR into it? or as you said the 200Turbo! There was a thread kicking about on the MZ/Rover forum not too long ago for a Evo engine into a ZR?!!? :S

Think honda's are quite interchangable (engine wise) aswell, could get a CRX and slip in a 1.6 VTI or 1.8 Type R engine in it?

I've heard the MGB and MG midgets, basically older cars of that marque chassis arent really designed for high power output! As advised from my local garage, said something like that you're better off just restoring it and enjoying a cruise on a nice summers sunday.

Define cheap, and are you any good with a multimeter or are you just a spanner wker?

Also, can you weld?

Answering those 3 questions will get you a LONG way down the road of deciding whats for you, and what, most certainly isn't.

MGB is a great car as parts are so cheap and readily available from so many suppliers.
