Hey all, just a quick question wanting some friendly advice.
At the moment im learning to drive, and i have a little Peugeot 206 LX 1.4 8V.
In the next fortnight ive got my practical driving test. If i pass then my current insurance will no longer be valid as the company i'm with only specialize in drivers with provisional licences. So i will be needing to take a new policy out. I've been looking around with the comparison sites and so far the cheapest quote ive seen is £3,700 fully comp eek . Even though im a 17 year old lad. This is still only a group 3 insurance car and i was expecting a high premium but nothing like that. It's completley rediculous for what it is. Its not exactly boy racerish either, 5 door completely standard.

Anyway does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do? It has to be fully comp (thanks to my parents) so third party is out the question, also the car is registerd in my name and is currently insured in my name as well. I am not going down the road of putting it in my parents name. Otherwise next year I will have to take the same hit again as i wont build up any no claims bonus.

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks smile

Add parents as additional drivers this generally will reduce the premium.

yes
Add them as named drivers to YOUR insurance. Realised I should try this and I'm nearly 30 smile (Please excuse the caps, but some people try getting added to their parents insurance on their own car which is Insurance Fronting and is not allowed.)
Also:
  • Ask you current insurers if they can suggest/refer you to someone. (Business opportunity for them...)
  • Try doing a Pass Plus course, some companies may give a discount for it.
  • Limited your milage?
  • Higher excess? I remember reading on here somewhere additional (seperate) insurance is available to cover the excess on your main policy if you need to make a claim.
  • Try calling direct, start with the most competitive offerings from the comparison sites.
  • Insurance Broker? They may know of some you don't.
  • Change car? Prob not possible from what you said, but an idea.
All I can think of to start with. HTH.

Thanks, Just tried this, the company with the quote of £3700, there quote has now shot up to £4,257. And Another has given a quote of £3794. Thats with both my parents on the insurance.

Also i currently have my voluntary excess set to £250. Could someone explain this to me at all? It's one bit im not 100% on and i know can be a major factor in working out quotes.

Also tried with Pass Plus added and it hasnt made a penny's difference to the quote.

Bell Insurance. They've consistently come out as cheapest when trying to insure a car.

Wow, so you're such an infamously bad driver and you haven't even got your licence yet? hehe

You know can go TPF&T right?

No, ive only been 17 about a month and a half, just the waiting list for driving tests in my area is horendous at the moment.
Also i cant go TPF&T because of my parents they want me to go fully comp.

Why aren't your parents allowing you to go TPFT? The car can't be worth much more than the excess and the increased premium, surely?

yikes Move House?
I assume you'll be using the car for 'social' reasons, will you driving to work as well? You may be able to remove commuting if it's not needed.
Just try a TPF&T quote just to see the comparison, There wasn't much difference in cost when I first passed. Cheap car, biggest risk was me hitting something expensive.

It is crazy, my little 1.1 Pug 206 cost me £1500 (TPF&F) when I was 17 and is still costing me £800 (TPF&T) a year now and I am 20 with 3 years NCB (IE, never crashed) Luckily, I am 21 in June and the premiums shoot right down to a little over £300 (fully comp) for the pug or £800 (fully Comp) if I upgrade to something like a 2.0 MR2 Rev5 T-Bar Turbo...already looking smile

I am not suprised that insurance for new 17 year olds is now even more than what I paid as my cheapest quote was with Quinn...and we all know what happened there...

I don't live with my dad (only my mum) but I found that adding a male to the policy increased it, whilst adding my mum reduced it, so that may be another option for you.

All in all mate I would try and persuade your parents to let you insure as third-party only but you do it on the understanding that if you smack it into something then the damage comes out of your wallet. The thing is, 02 reg Pugs are worth a little over 2K if in MINT condition so depending on your own cars age and condition you will pay a lot more this year in premiums than your car is even worth so its not really worth taking out fullly comp as the gamble is that you have just paid for your car again. (atleast this is what I have always worked to)

All that being said, it is well worth taking the hit for the next few years so that at 21 you have some tasty NCB tucked away and can take advantage of your cheaper premiums. biggrin

I know this is very little help to you but it is the way it is for us youngsters I am afraid.

Dont just try comparison websites, i've had to source 3 insurance policies so far, and each time Tesco or Direct line have managed to offer me the cheapest when i go direct to them! what baffles me is why you bought a car without checking your insurance on "already passed" scenario before buying? if you look around at different cars for insurance there's always something strangely cheaper than most... Try explaining to your parents that you probably wont benefit that much going fully comp compared to TPFT because of the overall value of the car, increased excess, and increased premium <- but always check fully comp and TPFT because sometimes fully comp actually works out cheaper! If you're not going to be driving a lot put your annual millage lower. If you're not going to be driving at night time then look into the specialist companies which dont allow you to drive between 11pm and 5am.

Not a very PH answer, and not something I was prepared to do at 17, but a lot of my friends from similar postcodes waited until they were 18 to get their own cars, their first year of insurance was usually a lot less painful than my own.

Before buying the car we did check what the insurance was going to be like, this is only going back about 3 months, but it seemed pretty reasonable (as far as 17 year old male insurance goes) we were looking at between £2000-£2500 fully comp but all of a sudden there seems to be at least another £1000 on top, also just looked at quotes for TPF&T and the cheapest ive had is £3446
