Yes, the September to March plate will be 60, from now untill 2020, the two registrations a year will be the first as the year e.g 10, 11, 12, 13 etc, then September untill March will be 61, 62, 63, 64 etc. I'm sure ive also read somewhere or seen somewhere that from 2020 they will simply move over to 70. We can only wait and see on that one haha smile

That's correct. The first release is simply the year ie. 08,09,10,11,12...20

The second release is the year plus 50 ie. 58,59,60,61,62...70

They won't need to change the system until 2049/50 and by that time they can just start again.

We'll all have personal jetpacks powered by the now red-giant sun that is beginning to swallow the planet. Alistair Darling will still be alive and his eyebrows will be slowly turning grey and the wheel will be banned and roads turned into immigration centres.

Sounds more believable than most environmental reports...

Hang on....

We'll end up with a duplicate in 2015!

This year's must have plate is 10; so presumably we'll then have 15. Great. But in 2015 car's will also have to be marked up as 15. Unless 50 is added; making an identifier of 65. Which raises the issue of what happens halfway through, presumably 70 becomes the identifer as 5 has been added. But then that's the same as the 2020 plate. presuming 50 is added to that.

It's a really crap system, in my opinion, that purely exists so that a car's new-ness is flashed about for 6 months. The old plates with a letter identification looked so much better and were simpler to decode.

Surely there must be some alternative.

Um - I think you missed the way it works.
March each year, new plate is issued with the year - 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13... 20, 21... etc
September each year, add 50, so 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63... 70, 71... etc.

No clashes until we get to 2050 or so...
