What do we reckon to the feasibility of fitting a W8 out of the Passat into a golf, maybe a V6 4motion as the passat is a 4motion too?

If it could phisically fit, then it should be possible. Cooling could be an issue, as would drive train stresses. I suspect you would have to replace a lot more then just the engine to get it to work.

I think VW themselves built a prototype with W12 engine in so W8 should be easy.

Unbelievably fast in a straight line but couldn't go round corners.

V8 in a FWD car is just wrong. It's like having a hairy chest but no penis.

That said it is a bit stupid.

VW did seriously consider bringing out a W8 Golf 4MOTION "Hyperhatch" in 2004 and there were a couple of test mules knocking about Wolfsburg. I think in the end it probably proved too nose heavy, expensive to produce and not powerful enough (280-300 bhp) given the likely weight.

Would be a lovely car though. Shame it was never actually produced.

Why bother? is my question. I can't recall anyone making good power out of the W8 motors, whereas the VR6 can be worked to north of 900whp if you really try.

Just seems a bit pointless really.

r36 conversions will be the more common 6cylinder choice for VWs as the prices are starting to come down a bit. It was R32 engines in everything from mk1- mk5 cars so R36 has been done in a mk2 an mk4 as far as i know.

The advantage of the r36 is it makes pretty much the same power as a w8 and is a smaller unit to fit in the bay plus leaving enough space for turbos or superchargers...

why would you bother when you can get 700 horses from a 4 pot vag motor ?

Because V8/W8 are cool! Sound better than a 4 pot and I think putting a W8 in a 4Motion would be cheapish and reliable way of getting something fast and a bit unique

LOL you would rather a 1.8 20vt to a VR6 or W8 with the possability of twin turbos or supercharger.... loon.

2.8V6 in the Passat 4Motions is a different lump (wide V) to the V6 used in VR6, R32 etc (shared head, better described as offset bores)

To be fair I've never heard if any engine mods for the W8 so not sure if it's possible
and certainly wouldn't fit in a golf with twin turbos lol

This is quite important actually, the VR "series" ie 2.9/2.8 VR6, R32 etc are very narrow angle V6s and there is still not a great deal of room left over. A couple of friends and me are currently dropping an R32 into a rather leggy Corrado I bought, and there really is not much room for messing around. Slimline fans, for instance, are a must. I would guess that if you moved all ancillaries, battery washer bottles etc, to the boot it would give you a bit more room, but I am not convinced it would actually fit.

And of course, the point about power to weight has already been made.
