Is it just me or are young drivers insurance rates ridiculously high?
The price are also constantly going up. I got a quote this time last year of £2300 on a nova merit. I just did it again, exactly the same, and its risen to £5600 :| At this rate ill be sticking to my push bike cause I will never be able to pay out that much money frown
can anyone help?

Thanks,
Tom

The rates are certainly high for young drivers but unfortunately it's for a reason.

Unfortunately big claims by the minority push up premiums for everyone.

I knew rates had gone up this year but over 100% seems a bit steep.

Only advice I can give is shop around and try and get a low group, low value car to start off. If you can keep the miles low this should help keep the cost down to.

Some insurers are offering 'pay as you drive' which could be more affordable if you don't do too many miles.

Vauxhall Novas have a....reputation....

Maybe a different car would have a lower insurance premium? Id be surprised if you couldnt get it below £1500. Try Pass Plus (I know its rubbish, but it saved me £300 on Elephant). Low mileage, 3rd party and so on?

My 18 year old son recently passed his test and bought a Renault Clio 1.2

His annual premium was £3300 - and he subsequently got that down to £2800 after 2 months.

He used www.confused.com

We also found that quotes would vary widly from one week (day even sometimes) to the next, for the same person and vehicle.

Don't be disheartened, at least you'll get on the first rung of the ladder and then hopefully it can only get cheaper as each year passes (assuming you don't have any claims!).

Try all the tricks in the book, third party fire and theft for definite, put both your parents on their as named drivers if you can, put it under 4000 miles a year, if you can say its on a drive or in a garage that will help. Also Pass plus is a must.

I noticed that aswell, last year got a quote on a Cooper S around £1900 - No big deal as I was only 19. Looked again a few months into this year and the cheapest is around £3500 :O Was rather surprised.

Unfortunately there is no scheme to help out those young drivers who are careful. Seems to be you have to have at least 4 years no claims to prove anything.. frown Also I bet no one ever looks at why a young driver got into an accident in the first place. Overtaking someone doing 40 in a 60. (I know its no excuse, but the frustration could have been avoided)

Second this. The price dropped quite a bit by putting both me and my wife on the policy.

Also try for a high excess. Oddly enough, 3rd party f&t worked out more expensive in most cases...

Yep, a high excess helps too, fully comp is generally cheaper on more expensive cars, whilst 3rd party is cheaper for older cheaper cars in my experience. Also for some reason turning 20 has dropped my insurance significantly, i am paying the same now for my 275 bhp Focus ST as i was for my 125bhp suzuki swift sport at 19 (not that thats any help to you at the moment unfortunatly) Just go on a price comparisson site and fiddle about with loads of different cars you are considering, prices often do not follow insurance groupings and can suprise. I.e for me a BMW Z4 with 170bhp would be more for me to insure than an e34 M5 with 345 bhp, which costs me about the same to insure as a mk1 mx5, which to my mind is just bizzare, but there we go, just search around, fiddle with settings and try and play the insurance game (as it is often guesswork/a bit of luck that gets you that magic price at a young age.)

And avoid the usual Vauxhall / Saxo etc. They DO seem to attract higher premiums.

I'm in the same boat at the moment, im 17 and got my test in a few weeks time. After which i will need insurance on my pug 206 1.4 LX. Been through a few comparison sites and been direct to a few companys and so far cheapest quote ive had is £3700 fully comp with both my parents as named drivers and third party fire & theft works out as near as makes no odds £3500.

These are rediculous prices. All the insurance companies wonder why theres so many young uninsured drivers on the road but if there going to give them a premium like that then im not suprised.

All I can say is, I'm glad I'm not 17.
