thanks guys
i like the audi and the saab
which one would be more reliable and cheaper to run ?
i do my own work so its just cost of parts and things failing that id be concerned about
Either would be fine. I'd go for the Saab, on the basis that you'll get a better one for your money, and there are tons of of 900s in scrapyards for cheap bits. They're based on the Mark 3 Cavalier with Saab's own engines, so are pretty simple.i like the audi and the saab

900 will do 28 - 35mpg
Turbo is 175bhp
N/A 2 litre is a bit slow
Handling is crap - you can improve it at a price
9-3 is supposed to be better: worth finding if you can?
Make sure the roof cover lid thing opens and closes properly - the motor gears always fail, and it's not cheap to sort out
Engines are chain cam, not belt. They rattle eventually though
I think that's it. They're wallowy things though - don't expect cornering precision, but surprisingly refined with the roof up. Rear window is glass, with heating element.
I have owned a couple Audi 80 Cabs and a Saab 900 Cab.
The Audi was by far the better looking car and in my opinion a better driving car too. The issues you have to be wary of with the Audi is the roof, majority of cars in that price range will have a manual roof however the button which is located in the drivers side door well to pop the rear open tends to fail. Getting this rewired can be a pretty expensive thing unless you try it yourself, in which case you just need to be handy with electrics. The fault in question will be the wiring loom on the boot lid, these sometimes get trapped and cut, hence stopping the roof cover from opening.
Also with the Audi you will have a rear plastic screen; these can discolour after time, if you buy one with an opaque screen then factor in at least £300 to have the rear plastic screen changed.
Apart from that the Audi will be ok, I think most of the V6 ones suffered power steering pump issues so make sure that works ok and the pump is not leaking, also be sure to check that the suspension is ok a lot of them suffer from the bushes failing.
Finally with the Audi, and any Audi in fact remember to check the cambelt has been replaced as this is most likely to cost you a good £300 to have replaced – dam Audi mounting the engine so far forward.
With regards to the Saab you will find most will have electric hoods and also a rear glass screen. Check that the hood works ok. Don’t bother looking at the 2 litre as it really is gutless go for the turbo as a minimum.
The ride in the Saab is a lot worse then the Audi, personally I thought the Saab suffered from scuttle shake far more then the Audi and in fact probably one of the worse for scuttle shake out of all the convertibles I have ever owned.
The interior is the Saab will most likely be leather and will have heated seats, so overall a better spec then the Audi for similar money but in my opinion the Audi is the better car. Put it this way I would happily get another Audi 80 cab but not bother with a another Saab 900 cab.
Either way you are unlikely to be able to get 4 adults in either car in comfort, unless you are all pretty short.
