About to make irrational car purchase and enrich BP
Discussion

I have a strange attraction to Lincoln Mark IVs. Maybe it's due to the Mk3 found in the French Connection, or the fact that it's so absurd and comical so as to be unique, or maybe because I've gone mad from overwork. In any case, I had the chance to drive one and will soon close on a blue/blue one. It drives like a boat, makes 200HP from 7.5 (!) liters, and gets at best 12 MPG US combined (14.4 Imperial). Oh, and the hood (bonnet) is long enough to have a picnic on - and I mean while physically being on the hood itself. Did I mention it weighs about 5400 lbs (2.5 tons). What other car can represent everything that was (is) so wrong with American consumerism than one of the most outlandish cars ever put on the road?

You had the chance to drive one, and you still want it? I think the novelty will wear off very soon, especially around the 12MPG mark, when petrol is around £6 a gallon.
I'm in the U.S., it's about 2 pounds a gallon. It doesn't drive well, in the sense that it handles or is responsive. In fact, there is about a 1/4 turn of a dead spot in the middle. And I still want it. I think I have some kind of a bug living in my brain or something because everyone thinks I'm nuts! For some reason I've always wanted something similar to this.
Visiting my friend in Maryland, we were towing his race car to the track with a 5.7 V8 Chevy Silverado.
Auto, it basically went everywhere in tickover, having to use some throttle when initially pulling away or going up hills.
Such a relaxed way of driving!
Would only want one from a collector standpoint, but I do like them all the same.

It's nuts.
That's why you should do it.
Buying a car because you want THAT car, and not because it's the best value/most economical way to get from A to B is part of what being a PH is all about imho.
It is nuts in every sense of the word and maybe that's what is drawing me to it. There is NOTHING sensible about the thing, not even the clock:That's why you should do it.

They also had "designer" versions including Pucci, Givenchy, etc.

(This is the later Mark V)

Ignore the philistines. This car is epic! It is the very pinnacle of crass 70's overstyling and remained true to the spirit of American cars for American roads, not stupid globalisation. It is grossly excessive, self-indulgent, selfish and totally isolated from common sense and should be applauded for that - seems familiar to modern human qualities to me.
Look great in burgundy metallic and make the waftiest European cars look like rigid platforms.
Just be prepared to be called Huggy Bear or Frank Cannon and car sickness.
Of course, you could put sport springs and rheo-magnetic sports dampers on it following which it would handle like a divan bed.....but if Dodge can make a Ram handle....

Why that huge front overhang - is it FWD?
Seriously, I agree with everything ZesPak says - you should go for it!
No, RWD! Not difficult to throw the rear out at all given the big block V8 (350 ft lbs @ 2200 or so)!

No seriously, you won't be able to stop.
I think you should go for it though. I'd definitely stop and have a good gander if I saw that docked up anywhere near me.
