Went to park the car at the end of some bays on a small road today so no reversing required; came too close to the kerb and banged the front nearside alloy (wasn't concentrating). Feel a tool:

I think the alloy's ok - just needs visuably repaired. But do you think I could get away with that loose bit on the tyre? It seems to drive ok and doesn't seem to be deflating. Ta.

Poor Fabby how can you treat a vRS like that?

If the tyre as no bulges or dents then I would say it is ok, the flap that you are holding off appears to just be the rim protector so is excess rubber in anycase.

Looks fine. Don't beat yourself up.
You should see MrsJem's alloys. Butchered!
Along with the offside rear wing she scrapes along the fence every time she leaves the drive!!!!!!!!

did the same myself 5 days after picking up my scirocco from the dealer.

i just pulled the 'flappy' rubber off. cleaned up my alloys (brake dust) and tyres - coat of tyre dressing and all is well

can't notice it now tbh. tyre made thicker at that point to protect against this sort of thing.

I completely agree. I'm always so careful with parking - always lowering the n/s mirror to see the rear wheel so I don't kerb it when reversing in.

To be honest the tyre does look ok, but I'm not sure about that scratch in the final picture? Will be getting the wheel refurbed asap though.

Cheers for your replies!

Happened to me at Halfords car park, it was when I was reversing into a bay and I misjudged a little and clipped my back wheel. Annoyed with myself more than anything but the tyre damage was similar to yours, just a bit of rim protector scraped off, nothing serious. Wheel will be getting refurbished soon too smile

How deep is the scratch, it looks quite superficial on the photo? Personally if it is only superficial I would be tempted to fill it with glue to limit it flexing, if it is deep then yup a new tyre as it may split under load.

Serious question to which I don't expect a serious response.

Just how hard do you drive it?

If we are talking a little faster than average and mainly motorway and fast road work then you *should* be okay.

If you drive it like you stole it down roads with lots of high energy cornering and big stops and can often smell and feel the heat from the tyres, let alone brakes, I would be getting a new one, just to be sure.

I'm not a tyre tec though so have absolutely no grounding behind this response as to be honest I would be getting quotes for a new one anyway myself as I have a bit of a "thing" about tyres.

Nonsense, the part of the tyre damaged is to protect the wheel rim, nothing more. It won't make any difference to handling or safety.

I certainly don't drive it like I stole it but I do sometimes go near the limit of grip going around roundabouts etc... My main concern is that I'm going home from uni in about a fortnight and that's a 200 mile motorway slog at 'motorway speeds'.

On closer inspection that slit on the sidewall seems to be about half a mil deep. Is that cause for concern?

No. That bit of the tyre just protects the wheel.

Missed out 'to be' (visibly repaired), ie. get the alloy refurbished so there aren't any marks on it! And yes I misspelt visibly.
