The Combustion Engine Hall of Fame
Discussion
I think that most people will agree that there is a strong possibility that the combustion engine as we know it could well go the way of the dodo – being relied on more as an oversized battery charger than the primary mode of drive, at least in some market sectors.
Therefore, the knowledge and enthusiasm that the Pistonheads community hold would become a rarer thing.
With this said, what engine would you put into a ‘Hall of Fame’ and why – Lamborghinis first V12, the birth of an icon or maybe the VAG 1.8T for taking over the world!?
Me, I would have to include the BMW M50 2.5 I6 for the fact that it gave the E36 a great soundtrack and enough power to put a smile on your face around a round-about.
This is my first thread so be gentle if it doesn’t take!
As suggested by PAT H, please limit to road cars and bikes - i think there should be enough

The old 3.2 I6 in the E46 M3 is a lovely engine, quite torquey but also revvy with a brilliant soundtrack. Therefore, the knowledge and enthusiasm that the Pistonheads community hold would become a rarer thing.

Also, the Honda Vtec engines from the 90s. Managed very high n/a outputs from small engines:
1.6 185bhp in the old Ek Civic type R.
1.8 197bhp in the Integra Type R
And the 2.0 in the S2000 making 240 na bhp.
The LSx engines from GM too, cheap, good fuel economy, and huge tuning potential.
This is going to be like Groundhog Day, but it is always a bit of fun.
You are going to have to limit this thread to road car and bike motors, otherwise it is going to be full of RR Merlins, Deltics and DFV Cosworths.
Road car and bike list?
Alfa Arese V6. Just sublime.
Lotus Twink. The proper one, not the 900 series.
BMC A Series 1275 S. With maniflow LCB.
Triumph 650 twin.
The Rover V8 has to be worth an honourable nod of respect.
Citroen 2CV flat twin, for being unbreakable.
That 1250 Zetec Ford motor, for being far better than it ought to be.
The Jaguar straight sixes and the V12 need to be in the list.
BMW flat twin bike engine.
Royal Enfield's 500 single.

TVR Speed 6 engine for the sound, output and flawed brilliance.
Porka GT3 engine - high specific output from something dating back to air-cooled motors. Very nice noise.
Corworth BDA - The sound and the fury! Ooh, and the fact that the 4AGE was a mm perfect homage to it :-)
