To sell? Or not to sell?
Discussion
Hey guys,
a friend of mine has been umming and arring of late over what he should do about his Fiesta zetec s (mk6).
His options are:
So, Pistonheads, what do you think, modern mk6 zetec s, or the now 10/11 year old 106 gti and a motorbike?
a friend of mine has been umming and arring of late over what he should do about his Fiesta zetec s (mk6).
His options are:
- Keep the zetec s, and enjoy having a nice modern car and just keep maintaining that making sure its running sweet.
- Sell the zetec s, buy a 106 gti for around the 2k mark (so a good'urn), fit a full cage to it as well as some proper seats and choice upgrades all round. Then on top of this buy a motorbike as well as kit
.
So, Pistonheads, what do you think, modern mk6 zetec s, or the now 10/11 year old 106 gti and a motorbike?

So sell a reasonable car and replace it with a chaved up 106? I would keep the fiesta.
Well actually what I would do would be sell the fiesta and buy some thing fun: bmw, mx5 etc etc
The reason he was considering it, was not for looks or reputation, but the fact that the GTI is one of the best regarded cars handling wise, as well as being quicker than a ztec-s, 100bhp vs 130(??)Well actually what I would do would be sell the fiesta and buy some thing fun: bmw, mx5 etc etc

I'd hardly call a 106 GTi charved up. Fitting a rollcage etc is quite the opposite, he is simply improving a car which is already highly regarded. Well actually what I would do would be sell the fiesta and buy some thing fun: bmw, mx5 etc etc
If as you say above, insurance isn't an issue, I would sell. 106's are becoming increasingly cheap and it's only a matter of time before they go the way of the Saxo or the Renault 5. He'll have to declare the mods remember, so his premium is likely to increase should he fettle with it.

And yes it would be used on the track, however, easy on the stereotypes there chap.

Now tell me you wouldn't want a cage in one.
It would have to be keep and maintain for me.
I'm 23, and the idea of leaving a relatively refined car and move to the 106 GTi would leave me cold. As a track day car the 106 would be more fun than the Zetec S in standard from, but day to day I can see a caged 106 being a bit bothersome.
I agree that you have to start somewhere with regards to motorbikes, but why not wait and not be limited?

Have you seen pictures of how wafer thin and easily crumpled 106/saxos are, the cage would simply be to provide a little bit of extra safety in the event of a crash.

How on earth can a major car company get away with selling something that structurally unsound as recently as 10 years ago? It's like building a house out of twigs and dung...And yes it would be used on the track, however, easy on the stereotypes there chap.
