simple car question ?
Discussion
which one as a spare runaround (4th car):
1998 9-3 convertible
2000 VW Golf MKIV TDi
1999 Ford Focus 1.8 TDi
the focus will be dirt cheap to buy and to run and arguably the best to drive, the Golf will be cheap to fill up but a bit nicer to sit in and own, the saab will be a few hundred quid more than the Golf and more fun with the roof down but arguably expensive to fill up and run

I'd pick the Focus - purely as a runabout.
i found this one up the road from mebloke sounds really decent and has serviced/taken care of it:

if i could get it for say 1100-1200 it would be a steal i reckon
and i've owned a 2.0 Ghia estate before so know the drill with them

I'd try and go for a Zetec TBH...
I had the 2.0 Ghia and found it too 'thick'. I f i was going for a petrol i go for the 1.6.But whilst i know the Tdi isnt remotely as good as the later TDCi's... im not going to be to worried about acceleration or power delivery to be honest. Its just a spare car.
As in trim.
'CL' is real boggo spec, even below LX!

If you're worried about mpg etc why spend money on a fourth car?
dont want to use my porsche everydaythe other porsche I dont own yet

so I only have ONE regular car at the moment (the volvo) but the wife uses it ALL the time so that leaves me with zilch at the moment (unless i use the 993 which i dont want to every day)

I'm making this decision at the moment (3rd car; purely just a load lugger for bikes and kayaks - only reliability and comfort matter). I'm considering a Toyota Avensis or a VW Golf from around 2001/2002.
naah..you want a Volvo V70
most comfortable seats in any car at any price
built like a brick s
thouse and they never go wrong200k miles is nothing for a V70
wouldnt get anything else for w workhorse/loadlugger personally
