If you had £5-6k to spend on a performance car, what would it be?

Critea is as follows - comfy, 200BHP+, forced induction prefered, RWD or 4WD prefered, relatively subtle

Also, I'm 21.. insurance is cheap on some cars, but expensive on others (for example: insurance on an AMG C32 is £1500, but insurance on a Honda S2000 is £3000), so not all blindingly obvious cars are do-able.

I was thinking along the lines of:

Mazda RX8 231 (MPG and Rotary engine issues put me off these)
BMW 330ci Sport (I have a BMW 520i with sports bits, and absolutely love it, which sways me towards these a lot)
Mercedes AMG C32 (bit too expensive really - prices start at £8k)
Audi TT 225 Quattro
Audi B5 S4
Audi S3
Nissan 300zx TT (needs to be UK spec, as Imports cost twice as much to insure)

Any other suggestions?

Any comments / info on any of the cars I've mentioned?

Chimaera was too expensive - around the £3k mark to insure. Not tried classic insurance though..

The obvious car missing from your list that seem to fulfill the criteria is the subaru impreza WRX (I assume STI is too expensive to insure?) although I expect you have considered/ruled them out?

Impreza WRX is £2300 to insure - too much! Not all to keen on them anyway

I would (and did) get a classic. Insurance can be much cheaper.

If you are 21 and like a 520 you are a bit strange, hence you'll probably love the 330 or even a 323.

Myself I found them very dull but then I'm only 40 and wouldn't consider a 5 series for at least another 10 years.

If your insurance details are similar to mine (which they are by the sounds of it) Try an e34 M5 3.8, can get a pretty good one for that price.

I would abso-bloody-lutely love one of those, but nope.. insurance is too much!

Shame.... for some reason they dont appear to be prohibitively high for me. Im guessing an e36 m3 saloon (non evo) is too much to insure too? How about an e34 530/535 they look very nice too. Audi s2 or an early s6 may be some to consider too.. VW bora v6 4motion could be worth a try too?

All good ideas!

E36 M3 is too much too - in the £3k region to insure.

E34 530 / 535 could be worth a look. They did a 'sport' didn't they?

Bora.. not my cup of tea.

I believe they did yes, fair enough on the bora, they can be seen as a bit boring, lovley engine though and pretty nippy. Honda accord type-r perhaps could be another one to look at.

I know running costs werent really mentioned, but unless you've got big pockets I'd imagine any 3.8 at that sort of money would need work in the near future.

You could get a tidy E34 M5 for £6k.

You probably could yes, but not sure about a 3.8.

ETA. I wouldnt buy one at that money without an incredibly good inspection. I'm sure there out there but I'd prefer my money in a 3.6 unless I was quite flush.
