About 2 months ago, I purchased a Corsa (1998 B model). A week after I purchased it, the headgasket went in spectacular style.

No problem - it was purchased from a trader with an RAC warranty.

It was taken to a Nationwide chain of Autocentres that the RAC people told me to take it to, I had my reservations as I had heard only bad things (and a couple of good things in fairness on here), but as it was a warranty job and I was not paying anyway, thought why not.

Nothing but problems since. They lost my RAC paperwork and reciept on picking up the car, and never called me back when they promised over a week of chasing to get it. The car top hose mount was put back on with nothing but sealant and was leaking everywhere. I took it back there again, they just put a gasket in and it was leaking from another part - I fixed it myself eventually by replacing the top hose itself. They also overfilled the coolant right up to the top when I collected it the last time.

All was running ok after this until it broke down this weekend (Alternator). While the breakdown guy was checking out the alternator, he noticed that the car was running a tad rough and we also noticed white puffs of vapour coming out the exhaust (same as last time when it went).

I am getting a compression test done when they fix the alternator, I am hoping the rough running is another problem and the vapour was due to the fact it was damp that day, however if the head gasket has not been replaced properly, what would be the first port of call?

I don't want to take it back to the place that did it as they were just incompetant at almost every level, and from asking around since they have bodged a lot of repairs, including my next door neighbors head gasket on their rover.

So if the compression test comes back as bad, is it going to be warranty company first, or original repair garage head office? I currently have it in my local trusted garage who will do everything correctly.

Did they skim the head or just fire a new gasket in ? Doesnt sound like a good job at all.

Repair took a total of two weeks (there was that long bank holiday weekend inbetween), and the head went off to be skimmed, so they say. I have no proof of it, however there would be no benefit in the car taking up an extra few days in their workshop just for the hell of it - I guess.
