My best mates mum bought a Mk3 Golf Gti about a year ago for £600. It has about 140,000 miles on the clock but nothing's gone wrong with it so far and it's turning out to be a great little car.

were you after something merely to use as a toy and to show boat or something that is practical?

You could easily get a reasonable 4th gen Honda Prelude on that budget - even a higher-end BB1 or BB4 (2.2 VTEC models, some with cruise control, 4wheel steering, folding mirrors, etc etc).

I paid £165 for a 2.0 base model that's done 200,000 and it's tight as a drum - plenty of rust on it but sailed through it's MOT first time needing nothing but a new drivers seat belt - they really are that reliable. The pop up arial even still works.

I bought this a couple of months back for £600, so it is possible to get something fun for a small budget. Not very practical though!

I should imagine that if he has £600 to spend then a fuel drinking monster would not be ideal....
