I would think the lowest group would be a 106 1.5D

206 1.4 hdi are a low insurance group. Have a look around and i'm sure you'll get one for around 2k.
I recently paid 2.3k for my 53 plate with 65k on the clock and full history.

I run a ZR td - not sure on the insurance group, but bet its slightly more than the rover 25 equivalent, and they're essentially the same car.

Mines a 2002 plate, 100,000 miles and got it for £1600 notes. The 2.0 diesel engine is a fairly old design, but its a solid lump. Gives a wack of torque, but in a fairly narrow power band. I regularly get 45 to 50 mpg on my commute in and out of london everyday.

Its not a bad car- suspensions a little too firm for me, and the rover 25 version would probably be cheaper to insure.

The Zr is missing a few things I'd have liked- no abs, and runs solid not vented discs at the front.

what about a citroen xsara diesel. I can imagine they are pretty cheap to insure and cheap to buy.

I had a R25 Petrol for a year, had the chance to own the ZR but decided not to as insurance was just silly for the same car but tinseled up! Nearly did get a Diesel R25 when i got the 1.4 Petrol, but dealer was just wanting too much for it! Had a mate who had a Turbo 25 and it was plenty of torque for him on NSL. If cheap and economical is what you want i dont really think you can go wrong with MG/Rover!

Why diesel and why low insurance group?

As in what is your expected mileage and fuel budget, would a petrol still be affordable on a pence per mile basis?

Also why not get some quotes, low insurance group does not automatically mean cheap insurance. Maybe try some quotes for a Pug 406 HDI or something.

Well you got a bargain then, as even today even the earliest 2000 1.4 TDI Polos are fetching £2k upwards. The £35 tax variants (2001-2002 & 2005 onwards IIRC) are worth even more. Popular little cars.

If you search hard you may find a Clio DCI

65bhp versions are group 2

80bhp versions are group 4

Was Band B, now C tax £35 this year, £30 next year.

Diesel Ford Mondeo (00-07) Awards for best used car. Cheap, Good economy, great drive and fantastic reliability. Not sexy, but still sad to see mine gone.

Thats a cracking deal you got. I got mine on 58k, a year older and said more, yet it was still the cheapest within 100 miles barring those with 100k+ mileages.

My insurance was 225 fully comp with ten years protected no claims. Couple that to 35quid tax and silly mpg....
