Which Engine Oil?
Discussion
Hi all, driving to work today and the ' stop' and engine oil lights started to come on, albeit irregularly, only 5 miles to wok so get here all good, but im assuming it needs topping up-although shouldnt it display something on the trip computer?
Oil required is 5w40 Full Synth i believe, but does anyone have any recommendations as to what to go for? Will be for normal road use, and nothing too pricey!
oh and its a RS Clio PH 172
Cheers Chaps!

anything, absolutely anything other than air and maybe 3 in 1
just buy a fully synthetic either 0w-40 or 5w-40 i wouldn't worry about the brand
and for the love of god, don't drive it to halfords!

Dont know about your car, but the light is normally low oil pressure, not low oil.
though the oil pressure isn't going to be great if there's none there!Edited by dylan0451 on Wednesday 2nd June 14:03
The 'Stop Engine Light', even if just flickering, is usually a good indication to stop your engine. Ignore at your peril - it is most likely indicating in this case that you have low oil pressure. It does NOT take long to destroy an engine when driving it with low oil pressure (the light probably comes on when it is VERY low pressure, i.e. less than 5psi, as opposed to around 40psi for a healthy engine)
The 'Oil OK' message on the computer is probably oil LIFE, and not oil level. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Any oil level meters are also generally useless when the engine is running too.
If the oil level is ok on the dipstick, then you may have other issues.... but try checking the level first.

Well I'm glad there are sensible people on this forum.
I used to be a member on a forum where a woman asked about topping up her oil, and she was advised "wait until the light comes on and then put a litre in it"
I told her not to do this, as by the time the light has come on, damage has been done.
She completely ignored my advice, as she obviously thought I was young and stupid, and listened to the older idiots and thanked them very much for their help.
To the OP, in future if you see an oil warning light come on, please pull over at the first available safe opportunity and switch your engine off. It really is surprisingly quick and easy to destroy all your bearings and journals when running low on oil.
