Momentum 99 - Tesco

Looks like tesco have changed 99 ron to "momentum 99". No mention of it being any different / better. The guy on the forecourt didn't even know.

Probably not changed, just done to generate a bit of interest and refresh the brand most likely.

Think its similar to what shell did... Not many people who didnt know too much about cars was aware of optimax, but most people know about Vpower though.

I suspect good quality brand name 97 RON with all the additives still works better for most engines. It's only really those running knock sensors or high octane specific maps that are likely to benefit otherwise.

A tad off topic... But has anyone noticed that most Japanese Cars (especially imports) require to be run on high octane? Well only the sportier versions? Even my little 1.5l Ignis Sport is requested to run on higher octane (on petrol cap)... Anything with Turbos and Jap i think require higher octane aswell? Just a thought... Maybe high octane is nearly standard for them...

Only ever use Vpower in my DC5. Tesco fuel has never been anywhere near it.

most petrol companies have a fancy name for there high octane fuel just to make it stand out from the crowd,i use standard 95 in my 51 plate astra but i use 99 in my boxster never had any problems with tesco petrol also used it for 6 years in my 944s2.i have heard no bad reports on any forums about theres or any other supermarket petrol unless you know better !!!

Suzuki dont just recomend, they require for sporty cars. Swift Sport, if you have a problem and they check the fuel. if its less than 98 Ron your warranty is void.

So only tesco and Total Excellium when I had mine in 2007

According to an earlier thread today; the Tesco juice has a lot of ethanol in it (whatever that means) compared to V-Power. Somewhere on the Porsche forum.

I here this kind of thing so many times and it makes me laugh. I have a friend who works at Shell Stanlow and the 95 ron Tesco sell is the same stuff that shell sell. The only difference is the additive package i.e the snake oil additives.

Companies are allowed to add up to 5% bio ethanol to their fuel. Whether or not you consider this to be a lot is another matter.

The Tesco 99 is meant to be every bit as good as V-Power and I assume this new Momentum stuff is just a rebranding. I wouldn't hesitate to use it but I have a Shell company card, so it's always V-Power for me. I recall a tuning company (Thorney Motorsport?) doing a test between the premium fuels of the time (i.e. Optimax rather than V-Power) and the Tesco one came out on top for power gains.

Correct. Many Jap cars require 100 RON fuel.

There is plenty of confusion though as there are 3 main octane ratings; RON, MON and PON.

We use RON as do I believe the Japanese. The US guys use PON which is an average or RON and MON octane ratings.

So when someone US says they run premium 91 octane its about equal to our 95 RON. They also have a low grade 87 PON octane fuel which we don't have an equivalent to here in the UK.

Not to say that Tesco have had one or two issues in the past over claims of being equal to "Brand Names" and on at least one occaison were made to remove them.
