During all the ice and snow around christmas my old car was written off. It was an x reg (2000) focus 1.8 zetec, 85000 on the clock with full history. The car did me fine as i was and still am a student on a budget. It did half decent mpg (around 35) and wasn't painfully slow. when the car was written off it was in good nick and probably worth around £1700/£1800. However when replacing the car i only had around a grand to play with, could of gone a bit higher at a push but ideally not. The replacement needed to be around the same size, economy, running costs, reliability was important and no slower. ideally faster!

I looked at various cars but this was quite a tall order considering i had significantly less to spend than the focus was worth.

What i ended up with was a nissan primera gtle. Its a t reg (99) and had 8300miles on the clock. some history but quite well cared for. the only issues were some minor bits of rust here and there which they all seem to suffer from. Almost standard apart from wheels that are similar to the standard ones but 17' instead of 15' and a stainless steel manifold and system all the way back to the back box but the back box is standard which i like because it doesn't look boy racer but sounds quite nice when you wind it up and quiet at normal speeds. i've had it since march and its averaged 33.5 mpg on mixed distance runs.its got all the same bits as the focus and a few more, all the electrics work and the leather is in good nick with just a small split in the leather on the drivers seat. I feel i did quite well but still like to play the 'what other car could i have got, game?'

What would people get to for-fill the same criteria/did i make the right choice or can any one come up with something better for around the same money?

That looks really nice. I assume these Primera's are bombproof?

They're as bomb proof as an 11 year old car can be i suppose. they've got a really high reliability rating on parkers. the bite on the clutch is a bit high but in all honesty for me new clutches are ware and tare so i dont mind replacing it if it goes. i still feel its good value. i also had a fair few issues with my focus so touch wood it should be better than that was.
