A coworker went to the local Mustang performance shop and obtained a tuning chip for his stock diesel F-250 Ford pickup truck. The GPS had the damn thing up to 160 MPH on the interstate on the way to work. Just after dawn on a rural stretch. His petrol Ram is supposed to make better with a similar chip he purchased but only to 140 so far. The insanity will progress later today I am sure. smile

With the drag coefficient of a billboard you must have been able to see the fuel gauge drop

Apparently. being that not only the fuel/air mixture but also the tranny shifts are all computerized, the chip has a more comprehensive influence. I am sure those understressed engines have no trouble with the work.

hehe. I wasn't looking, but probably so. Those big diesel trucks honestly do around 25MPG under normal conditions. I have no idea when chipped.

The top speed will mainly be a function of BHP and the gearing allowing it, followed by aero and weight. I don't see a big story in what you're saying, as it's not related to the type of fuel it uses.

The big story, at least IMO, is taking a bone stock work pickup truck, going to a local shop, buying a chip for $32 and going 160MPH.

And as it has the aerodynamics of a cardboard box along with the weight of an Elephant I'd say it had pretty decent performance.thumbup

How fast did it go beforehand? What was the change in output?

I suppose in Europe chipping turbocharged cars is nothing new so there's hardly the same excitement in the concept anymore.

True that chipping is commonplace over here but I still find it fairly astonishing that you get this;

to do 160 with the most minor of tweaks.

I would reach around 110 before and take a much longer time getting there. The Dodge Ram, I don't know yet.

I understand, but it is the God's honest truth. A $32 chip, some instructions from the friendly shop owner/fellow enthusiast, and away he went. smile The Chipped Ram is having a problem shifting properly when reaching certain speeds. The shop owner is good about not charging for some followup visits and tweaking advice.

I'm finding it very hard to believe a 50mph increase with a chip and nothing else in a vehicle of that weight. The increase in BHP to do that would be immense. Have you checked the speedo accuracy isn't set to 'BP Oil Plug Optimism'? wink

Here are the original specs, minus factory top MPH. I cannot confirm that yet.

"The 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty is available with a new 6.4-liter Power Stroke Diesel that delivers 350 horsepower at 3000 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque from only 2000 rpm. The F-250 Super Duty offers an integrated Tailgate Step, stowable bed extender, PowerScope power-fold and power-telescoping trailer-tow side mirrors, TowCommand System with integrated trailer brake controller and TorqShift transmission improves towing performance"

Just as an example, to make a Golf go from a top speed of 110mph to 150mph, you have to more than double its power output (from 85bhp to just over 200). In a heavier vehicle with worse drag, that's only going to be amplified.

My thought exactly, they have a electronically limited top speed for a reason..................

I bet it's fun. How did it feel at that speed? I suppose the long wheelbase helps with the stability but the aero's a bit 'inappropriate'.

That is possibly because that engine is already built to near limit output. Remember, a 6.4L engine putting out only 350HP is very understressed. A fuel-air-sting change can be very different in that case. There is huge room for power increase in that block. That is why Camaros, Mustangs, etc are so easily and inexpensively enhanced. Our aftermarket for such things is likely the most extensive in the world.

Louder wind noise for sure. Straight highway, very smooth ride. No, we did not take any quick corners! smile Only kept that speed for about 10 seconds as slower traffic appeared on the horizon (the ascent to the Mississippi River bridge). smile
