We have a roundabout here in Cardiff (Gabalfa for those who know) and I've had a problem whilst going right a few times. Here's what happens.

I approach the roundabout in the right hand lane, indicating right.
I journey around the roundabout in the right hand lane, still indicating right.

I try to pass the exit before the one I wish to take, still indicating right until my exit whereby I indicate left. Here's the problem. People pull out onto the roundabout and as the exit I wish to take is very close to the exit they've come from, I end up having to brake to prevent driving into the side/rear 3/4 of them.

Is it me or them? The fact that it has happened more than once is making me wonder what I can do to prevent this. I'm sure you're supposed to indicate right and travel in the right hand lane until after the exit you wish to take?

Its you, you're expecting other drivers to know what those flashing lights mean. Most don't in my experience.

It sounds like they are assuming you are going to continue going round the roundabout in the right-hand lane and so they think it's ok to occupy the left-hand lane? When are you moving over to the left lane to leave the roundabout? In my experience other drivers are too unpredictable on roundabouts to second guess their planned path so i tend to wait either way, but it sounds like others aren't as cautious!

Tonight both lanes pulled out so it wasn't the case of them thinking the left was clear!

But in general it is the left lane that pulls out. I must be leaving my departure lane change too late. Though I thought you changed lane to depart after you'd passed the junction before your exit. That's what I was taught.

Thats an awful roundabout for lane discipline, I know myself, people forgetting the the exits are mostly dual carriageways and thus you only pull into the outside lane when taking that exit, as far as i am concerned you would be quite correct in what you are doing, as technically on that roundabout it would be possible to take the inside lane and exit, as there are 2 exit carriageways, several times i have been cut up or pulled out on, on that roundabout.

Leaving your left indication too late? Aren't you supposed to do this passing the preceding exit? That said I don't know the roundabout in question and it could be the two are very close together.

I've often thought about buying a big old 4x4, welding lengths of RSJ on as bumpers (complete with jagged ends left from the gas cutter) and just ramming anyone who pulls out on me. They'd only do it once evil

Yeah the exits are very close, so I am indicating left just after the previous exit but you're then right on your exit. Badly planned roundabout in my opinion.

I won't be ramming anyone in my mx-5. That's some innuendo there.

I think Toxic has it right, I will start indicating left before the previous exit to mine. That might keep them from pulling out in front of me.

I know the roundabout, don't really understand the explanation of what's happening though!

No, A48 (eastbound) to A470 (into town). People from the Whitchurch Rd/Roath junction pulling out in front of me.

The latest phenomenon in Sheffield on roundabouts is....simply pulling out when one feels one has waited long enough, doesn't matter what is coming towards you, they have to brake to let you out. Because you are terribly important and carrying on with your jouney is equally important.

Happens on almost any roundabout of a reasonable size. Just makes me think 'if only i was in an old defender or vulva then i could just cut across the front of them'!

Roundabout near my work usually has traffic queuing nose to tail across it with traffic going into town in the morning, meaning you cannot exit the roundabout if you are heading out of town turning right.

Some days I sorely wish I had a beat up old tank of a Land Rover with a military spec front bumper, and just not braking in time.

This one?

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?oe=utf-8&client=...

Although what the OP is doing is certainly correct, what I would so it disable the right turn indicator after crossing over the A48 (2 o'clock position), the starting moving towards the left lane (if clear) then use the left turn indicator only after passing the Whitchurch road so people don't think you not heading for the city center. Of course you always bound to get some numpties... mad
