On this video, when they start racing the chap in the MK3 MX5 is practically bouncing off the limiter on every change he can.. Would that not be bad for the engine?
And whilst your watching the video, thats some pretty impressive driving considering the conditions

surely thats the idea of a rev limiter? to limit the revs to prevent damaging the engine?
So bouncing off it is okay? Obviously not on a drive to the shops will you be limiting it, but now and then its fine?I've never had the limiter in mine, I just thought it'd not be good for the engine.

It's there for a reason, if it would dangerous there would be a pre-rev limiter...limiter

And one more thing - in most of the standard cars there's absolutely no benefit from revving the engine so high, the best spot for changing the gear is below it anyway.

It's very difficult to keep off the limiter when going sideways in the wet like that- the sudden drop in traction from tyres gripping to tyres sliding tends to leave you with too much throttle and it's not easy to back off enough to get off the limiter but stay sliding.
Shouldn't do much harm though. Limiters are made to be hit!

I'm a bit confused here chaps. The limiter in my impreza is just past the redline. Shirley taking it into the red is baaad, but if the limiter is set there then is it okay to explore? I never go into the red zone but I suppose with a scoob there's a degree of driver awareness/sympathy involved.

The redline gives you something to aim at, and the limiter catches you when you miss it. Would be very frustrating if the limiter was lower or dead-on the redline as you wold be hitting it willy-nilly.dougc said:
