Hi all,

I wanted to check with someone hopefully more knowledgeable than me on this.

My car has my private plate on it, its just been sold on ebay, I've said to the buyer that I will be going to the DVLA office to put it on retention tomorrow or the day after.

Now, can I sell him the car once I've been there and done that?

Does he need to fill in the new keeper supplement of the existing V5 (the one in the private plates name) or does he need to wait for the new one?

I'm a bit lost as to whether he is allowed to take it away on its original plates when I've been to the DVLA office?

Can anyone make it more clear for me?

Either he gets the new keepers bit of the existing v5, and you potentially lose the plate when he puts it on retention, or he waits while DVLA get the new v5 and number to you, and you get plates made up. And he gets narked with the fortnights delay.

I was under the impression that going to the DVLA made it an instant as opposed to the wait?

Why might I lose the plate if he puts it on retention?

Because when he gets the V5, thats the plate. He then owns it and can put it on retention or sell it.

You really need to go to ther local DVLA office in person and sort it. It takes a few days, you need a new tax disk and MOT in the new number. Can also cause HPI checks to look a bit odd.

Best sorted 3 weeks before you sell the car.

He can retain it in my name as the grantee though it seems.

So I could fill this form out with him, put in the retention form with the fee they need. It says that if you do it this way you also need to put a v62 application for a new v5 in his name in the same envelope which cost £25, then he can take it and the plate gets retained to me.
Does that sound right?

you dont go to the dvla unfortunately. Or you can do but it is not instant takes up to 2 weeks as they need to transfer your old plate back to the car. Years ago it was walk in walk out not now.

You really should have got the plates swapped before selling the car.

I wouldn't let the buyer take it with that plate on the guarantee he will transfer it and give it you back, he may just decide to keep it and he is legally entitled to.

You will be looking at around 10 days at the moment to get the new plates sorted.

OK I get all the above, he MUST pick the car up before Wednesday so the only way we can do that is the following, if anyone can see an issue with it that would be great.

I am going to fill in the forms with his details and then have him sign where necessary on the day he takes it so that I know its all gone and done right, and not stitching me up.

I fill in the v317 - sections 2 and 4 for retaining a plate I will put the current private plate name in section 2, and then fill it out with his address etc etc.

I will then put that he does not wish to become the grantee of the number and is actually giving it to me, who I will name as the nominee.

Now that all seems fair enough ,it says I must send the new keeper supplement with his name on it, an application for a new v5 (v62) because he has obviously just taken ownership, and the money to do it, so £130 for 2 years retention and £25 for the new v5 for him. I send all this off and then he drives the car away (although what proof does he have that he owns the car?) as I will be sending off my bit of the V5 to let them know I've sold the car. Should I photocopy the new keepers supplement for him so he has proof? (not that he will be driving it as he is going on holiday for two weeks)

This should then mean that he can take the car on the current plate, within the week will get the permission to put the old plates back on (which I have) and will get the remainder of the tax on the old plate too.

Then in time he should get the new v5 in the cars original plate, and I will get the certificate of ownership with regards to the private plate and I'll get the letter saying thank you for notifying us of the change, and its all done.

Anyone see any holes there?

ETA @ Gizalog yes, that is why I will be putting my name as the nominee and posting it there and then with his signature so he doesn't do that.

You have a couple of options, BUT, by far the easiest is the following:

- Go to DVLA Office on Monday and put your plate on retention - £105 for 12 months, £130 for 24 months (you don't have anything else to pay once you've done this - it is free to put it onto a car as you've paid the £80 transfer fee).

- Sell him the car with a receipt and allow him to drive away with your cherished number plate on display and appropriate tax disc/MOT etc.

- Wait.

- Meet up with the buyer and fill out v5 (in your name but with the standard registration on) and send it off. Collect the old tax disc, MOT and number plates.

- Job done. It does involve a bit of trust though I have done it four or five times with no issues.

RFN

thanks, I might do this.

However, do you think the above method will work too?

He is going on holiday for two weeks you see as of wednesday.

Are you saying, that once I have paid £105 for a year's retention, there will be no need to pay a further £80 to transfer to another car?

If so, that is news to me - I must have not read V317 clearly!

I wanted to de-personalise my current car before putting it up for sale - you've made it easier for me if you confirm the question @ retention and no transfer fee.

Yes - to transfer is £80.

To retain is £25

Hence the £105 INCLUDES the transfer fee.

Thank you for the clarification, I incorrectly assumed DVLA wanted an further £80 to put my cherished plate onto another car.

I'll do it once I know delivery date of my new car - I'm putting my car up for sale privately and I want to revert it back to the reg no which DVLA assigned in the first place.

Thank you again.

Right.

He has said he can get it after his holiday.

So I have till July 2nd.

How do I go about this the best way?

As reading the website they say I need to send the V5 off with the retention form, what if the v5 is not back by the 2nd of July? How do I sell it to him?

Take completed forms, tax disc, copy of insurance cert, MOT etc to local DVLA office, hand over to person on counter who will check forms and also your money. . . . . . wait a week and you'll recieve details of the new reg numbers in post, with a cert to allow you to have a new set of plates made with the new number . . . . . .wait another week or so and you'll have the new V5.

Whole process on average takes between 2 and 4 weeks smile

Why on earth do people advertise a car for sale when its carrying a private plate that they know damn well needs removing, and can take up to 14 days to transfer?

its a v778 for retention i think.

v317 is to transfer to another car.

and yes, you need to do it all before and there is no point in going to dvla as all they do is check it and post it to head office.

DVLA have the following on their web site

"Take or send the completed application to your nearest DVLA local office."

So sending it to Swansea direct may well just bugger things up a bit smile

DVLA are being extremely slow at the moment I'm afraid.
