Hello folks, I'm currently in the US and will be Headed to the U.K.(RAF Menwith Hill) via the USAF.

I'm in search of a Subaru 22B, but I'm not opposed to other cars as well, Looking for something special I can't get in the US.

Here's the Deal, I wanted to see if there was anyone on here looking to buy a USDM car/truck as I would be able to get it there for free smile

If you're serious, I'm sure we could work out a deal.

Cheers
Scott

Shipping isn't a great part of the cost, unfortunately, what drives the cost up is the import duty of 10% on cars and 22% on trucks and then 17.5% VAT on top, neither of which a buyer would be exempt from if you sold it straight away.

Deporting 300 would be a plan. Preferably somewhere without internet access. biggrin

Do those rates apply to older cars as well as new ones?

A friend of mine is also planning on getting with a mate in the USAF regarding getting a brand new car imported for free and selling it to a punter in the UK. What sort of duty would be applicable should an already imported car be sold from a guy in the USAF to a UK punter? As it would be the selling of a US registered vehicle so all the parerwork would need to be done...

Are you looking at taking back whatever you buy to the US when you return?

Not many 22B's about, think Subaru only imported 16 official examples although there were more gray imports.

Good luck on your search though, afraid I can't really help much further. smile

How rare are TVRs in the states, I know at least one PH over there has one but surely they aren't that common.

Getting them road legal over there would be the main issue. I think it varies from State to State, but as a rule if it's not type approved then it's difficult.

I think if the vehicle is over 25 years old though it makes a difference.

Yep. they used to have a 5% rate for historic vehicles but everyone abused it so they now only apply that to something genuinely historic. The only difference with a car over 10 years old is you only have to get an MOT not a full IVA test but you can't register the car without the bit of peper saying all duties and taxes have been paid. There is an exemption for cars owned by someone resident in the US for something like 12 months and they have to keep it in the UK for a similar period IIRC - anyway, the point is that dodging the duties is practically impossible.

Just make sure if you plan to return with the car that you will be able to register it for use back home. There are certain cars which simply cannot be registered for normal road use and can only be used for 2500miles of show usage.

Can you get around the registration issues by being in the USAF?

If so you could make quite a bit of $$$ if you took a Skyline R34 GTR!

I believe the R34 falls into that group, of cars not allowed to be imported but I believe the R33 is furious
