Someone has crashed into my VW Golf whilst it was parked up outside the house. I have a suspicion that it was some dosey bint, picking up her kids from school, in a 4x4. So hopefully they are stupid enough to use that car again tomorrow, and I might be able to find out who it was. It may only have been worth £800 or so, maybe even less, but what makes people feel that it is perfectly acceptable to damage someone elses property and then simply drive off?...

I was about to put it up for sale as well, but it'll be worth even less now, so maybe a track slag is one option for it.

Anyway, does anybody have any advice as to how to proceed with this, should I phone the police up or should I try and see if I can find the car first and deal with it outside of the law?

Isn't it a crime to leave the scene of an accident? If it is, police might be interested but I've no experience of it.

Crime or not, it's getting proof/witnesses that will be the struggle.

Report it to the police by all means - but there will be little they can do without details of the car/witnesses.

Can you tell the colour or height of the car from the damage?

Certainly worth keeping an eye out for a car with matching damage, and camera to hand!

I have an idea of the height, but I can't say about the colour of the car, it's simply taken mine down to the primer, but my car colour may well be on the car that damaged it.

I have a feeling that I won't get anywhere with it, due to the lack of witnesses, although I may be able to ask the school if anyone saw it happen, as the school is directly opposite to the house.

Agreed as above, someone did it to mine old car smashed back end in, even had a good idea who did as it had to have been a truck type vehicle. Plus it was on the street where I live but unless you have any kind of proof no nope. frown Sorry.

Unfortunatly you have pretty much no proof, even if you find someone with a matching dent/scratch they will just say its a coincedence.

Its really st when this happens, someone hit my old focus on a car park and drove off. Causing quite a bit of damage.

I think you will just have to pay for it out of your own pocket frown

If it's taken yours "down to the primer" then the colour must be somewhere; i.e. on the car which knocked yours?

If you see some dozey bint parked up in a Rav 4 with a nice coating of VW Green on it, start chipping away at her car with a chisel and just say you are just taking your paint back.

If one were absolutely certain of the identity of the offending car, one might as well have seen it, and report it as such
