This is Herbie...

This is not Herbie...

And this is not Herbie...

So why is it that there are so many Micra's and 500's running around in full Herbie livery ??? confused

Been meaning to post about this every time I see one, but today I saw a 500 in full 53, made a mental note to post on PH, and then within the hour saw a Micra in the same 53 trim.

Herbie is a Beetle, not a Micra or a 500, so what's that all about?

I think you're judging it by the wrong standards. The originals were of their time and very popular and I still quite like them. Herbie Reloaded is a favourite of my 4 year old son.

And Lohan - not with a ten foot barge pole. Over-rated or what?

As for 500s and Micras, I can act as devil's advocate in saying that a 4 year old makes no real distinction and is only concerned with the "Herbie concept". I suspect some of these cars are done for the benefit of very small kids from which "kiddy kudos" is earned. The "new" Beetle is actually a bit of a fat oaf compared to the original and the 500 and Micra are closer in size to the original Beetle. It is wrong...but only to adults.

Perhaps what is more questionable is adults who make their cars into "General Lees" and so forth whether on original metal or inappropraite metal (look at all those "Starsky & Hutch" Capris in the 70's for example.... though the idea of that as a police car to start with required the suspension of belief).

For what reason would someone old enough to be able to drive want to earn 'kiddie kudos'? You're kind of creeping me out a bit here.

It is strange I agree. Why on earth would you want your car to be another 'brand' - just buy a new beetle and, sort of, have done with it.

I've only seen "old-shape" Beatles like Paul McCartney.

Kiddie kudos applies to your own kids and possibly your kids' friends. Have you not witnessed how parents now seek the approval of their kids instead of disciplining them? Then again, some choose to relive their childhoods with a modern car and don't fancy a 6 volt 40 year old car as a daily driver. Plus you simply can't buy a model Herbie so this may be the only option for your kids!!!

in the early 70's my dad nearly bought a beetle in herbie livery from the local dealer, I couldnt believe my luck. It was a promotion car to coincide with a film I guess. But unfortunately he decided to get an orange one instead. bah!
